Save money and carry multiple currencies with an American Express Global Travel Card

Paying for items while you’re travelling can be inconvenient if you’re using cash. It’s even more inconvenient if you use a credit card, as there is the risk of fraudulent activity on your account, along with the risk of losing your card or having it stolen. Then there are the foreign transaction fees to worry about when using a regular credit card, along with interest charges at cash advance rates from the date you made the transaction.

Yet using a prepaid travel card removes all of these problems. You only use money you load onto the card, so there are no interest charges to worry about.

You control how much money is available in the account, so you have the chance to control your spending budget while you’re travelling.

You’re able to load three different currencies onto the card, so there are no foreign exchange rates to worry about while you’re away. You have the option of US dollars, Euros or British Pounds. You lock in your exchange rates at the time you deposit your currencies, so you don’t have to worry about fluctuations in currency pricings or variable exchange rates offered at cash exchange outlets.

As the payments you make are processed by American Express, you’re able to use the card at millions of outlets and merchants around the world, along with millions of ATMs.

The American Express Global Travel card features no commissions on the money you deposit or on the currencies used when you purchase things.

You can reload more funds at any time conveniently, using the secure online banking platform. Alternatively, you can load more cash into your card using BPAY, or in person at any Australia Post outlet.

The funds you deposit into your account won’t ever expire, so you can keep them in the same currency you deposited for as long as you want. This can be ideal if you know you’ll be travelling again in the future.

There are also no account inactivity fees to worry about, so if you choose not to use your card for a period of time you won’t be penalised for it.

Transactions can be authorised by your signature or by entering your PIN. Keep in mind that the Travel card cannot be used to pay for purchases within Australia. This card is designed for use while travelling overseas only.

Deposit Amounts

There are minimum deposit amounts to abide by for each currency, as well as deposit maximums. These are shown in Australian dollars, but apply to the equivalent value of the currency being deposited. These are as follows:

US DollarsEurosBritish Pounds
Minimum Deposit Amounts$100 AUD (or equivalent in USD)$100 AUD (or equivalent in EUR)$100 AUD (or equivalent in GBP)
Maximum Deposit Amounts$30,000 USD€24,000EUR£16,000GBP

Online Access

You’re able to access your American Express Global Travel card at any time online. This lets you view your account history and transactions or locate nearby ATMs wherever you’re travelling. You can also change or update your details while logged into your account, including change your PIN.

Applying for Your American Express Global Travel Card

You can purchase your card from any Australia Post outlet. You will need to provide two forms of identification to qualify for your card, so take your Driver’s License and a passport or birth certificate to verify your ID.

Once you have your card you’ll need to activate it by calling American Express 1800 053 420. Load some cash into the account and it’s ready to be used to pay for purchases around the world.

      Hi Stephen,

      Thanks for your question.

You can load US Dollars onto your card at any American Express Foreign Exchange Services in Australia. You must have your Global Travel Card and a valid ID to reload and your funds will be immediately available.

      I hope this has helped.

      Hi Rahul,

      Thanks for your question.

Unfortunately, you’re unable to use this card to transfer to any bank account. You can only use it to make purchases online or in-store, or to withdraw money at the ATM.

      I hope this has helped.

Which card will allow Chinese Yuan to be used?

    • Staff
      Jacob | October 11, 2013

      Hi Greg.

      Thanks for your question.

There are no travel cards which allow you to load Chinese Yuan onto the card. You may want to consider a credit card with no currency conversion fee instead. You can compare these cards on this page.

With the American Express Global Travel Card, what is the transaction fee for purchases and is this per purchase? Thanks. George.

    • Staff
      Jacob | May 14, 2013

Hi George. Thanks for your question. If you have a currency loaded on to the card and it matches the currency of the transaction you’re making, then there is no fee. If this is not the case, there is a fee of 3.0% of the total value of the transaction, this is charged every time you make a purchase in a currency not loaded on to the card. There is also an ATM fee charged when you use the card to withdraw cash. Let me know if you need more information. Jacob.

I’m going to the US, so if I find an ATM that accepts Visa, I can withdraw some of the preloaded $US on the card?

What fees will be applied for using that ATM?

Can I check my transactions and fees applied online while I’m away?

    • Staff
      Jacob | July 29, 2013

Hi Allan. Thanks for your question. If you pre-load a currency onto the card you can withdraw it from an ATM that accepts American Express Credit Cards. American Express charge $2.00 USD when you make a withdrawal from an ATM, additional ATM fees may also be charged by the machine operator. You can review your account balance and transaction history online through the American Express Global Travel Card online portal. I hope this helps. Jacob.
