AMEX Gold Business Card review

The AMEX Gold Business Card is a charge card that gives you the opportunity to get the things you need for your business while earning reward points through the Membership Rewards program. While there are no interest charges on this card, there is an annual fee of $169 along with a Membership Rewards fee of $80 per annum. This latter fee is optional and only charged to you if you enrol in the Membership Rewards Ascent program.

With the rewards program, you have the chance to earn up to 1 point for every $1 you spend through your charge card. You will also receive a gift of 10,000 bonus points when you sign up for the card before 28 June 2016, are approved, and spend $1,000 in the first 2 months of membership.

You can also enjoy additional features like credit-free days on purchases, strong security features, and travel insurance. The American Express customer service also allows you to track your spending online or through instant alerts no matter where you are in the world. Benefits of the AMEX Gold Business Card

I’m wondering if a person who doesn’t have a business can apply for this AMEX gold business card because you state ‘Everyone can now have an AMEX gold business card.’

I ask this because you also state ‘Please be advised that only sold traders and companies are able to apply for this charge card online. All other businesses have to speak to a specialist who will help them through the process.’

As I have already bought my airline ticket, if I DO get an AMEX card now will I be given complimentary travel insurance or must the ticket be paid for with the AMEX card to qualify? Thank you. Bev

Hi Bev, thanks for your inquiry!

That is correct the AMEX Gold Business requires that “only sold traders and companies are able to apply for this charge card online. All other businesses have to speak to a specialist who will help them through the process.” Also to activate the complimentary travel insurance “Cover is effective when you pay the full fare for a Trip on the American Express Gold Business Card Account or with American Express Membership Rewards points.”

      I hope this helps.

Can points earned on this Business Card be re-distributed to other employees?
Can the points be used for personal expenses?

    • Staff
      Jacob | April 5, 2013

Hi Stuart. Thanks for your question and apologies for the delay in getting back to you. If you would like to reward your employees, you can give them the rewards you’ve redeemed with your points, but you can’t give them the points themselves. Say you wanted to give your employees a free return flight as an end of year bonus, you can use the points that have been credited to the main account and book flights in their name, and then send them the vouchers/tickets. The same with all American Express Membership Rewards. You can’t transfer the points to their account / frequent flyer membership, but you can give them the rewards. Jacob.

I would like to apply for a business credit card however, my business has not been running for long, it has started on 8 March. In addition, no funds has been actioned. Am I still able to apply for the card if i don’t have a verification of an tax accountant to state my business is legit?

      Jacob | April 5, 2013

Hi Wenny. Thanks for your question. Sorry about the delay in getting this response back to you, but for future reference and if anyone else would like to know, if your business is still in its infant stages, you can fill out the application and list your account’s contact details. American Express will liaise with your account to work through the application and assess you eligibility. Even if your business is still in the beginning stages of start up, you may still be eligible to apply for this card. Hope this helps.
