What do you want to know about American Express Membership Rewards?

Robert Bourne – Head of Membership Rewards, Australia & NZ at American Express

Membership Rewards is the loyalty program where American Express cardmembers can earn points for simply spending on their card. They can use those points to redeem for a wide range of flights, accommodation options, gift cards, and merchandise, as well as points for credit on their card.

How does someone join Membership Rewards? On most of our cards, Membership Rewards is included as one of the benefits. However, on some of our cards, an additional fee is charged for enrollment into Membership Rewards.

American Express card members earn points simply by spending on their card. Depending on where they spend, they can earn even more points. For example, on our Platinum Edge card, customers can earn up to 3 points or spend at supermarkets, they earn 2 points for spend at petrol stations, and 1 point for spend everywhere else, down to 0.5 point for spend on thing like utilities. In addition to that, from time to time, we offer bonus promotions where people can earn points even faster.

Do points expire? The great thing about Membership Rewards is your points do not expire, as long as your account is in good standing.

What can customers redeem their points for? That is the exciting part about the loyalty programs. With Membership Rewards, we have one of the largest ranges of redemption options for customers using their points. Customers can use their points for everything from travelling through to shopping. Our customers can transfer their points to frequent airline programs; they can transfer their points to frequent guest programs offered by some of our hotel partners. We also have a wide range of travel partners where you can use your points to pay for travel at American Express Online, partners like WebJet, Harvey World Travel, Travel Scene American Express.

We also have a wide range of gift cards at some of Australia’s leading retail partners, and also, a range of merchandise. If you can’t find any other options from those, you can use your points to redeem for a credit onto your account.

American Express offers the largest range of airline and hotel transfer partners in the market, in Australia. We give customers a choice of over 80 airlines, including Virgin Australia and New Zealand, and Singapore
Airlines, as well as our premium customers can transfer their points to the Qantos Frequent Flier Program. In addition to that, we give all our customers the ability to use their points to travel with partners such as WebJet, American Express Travel, Harvey World Travel, and Travel Scene American Express.

Yes, you can gift points to other card members. You can gift up to 50,000 points in a year to other card members, providing that they are in the same awards tier. For example, if you had a family member in the Ascent tier, you can move points across into their account.

The difference between the Membership Rewards Ascent and the Membership Rewards Ascent Premium program is that with the Ascent Premium program, card members can transfer their points into the Qantos Frequent Flyer Program. The Ascent Premium program is available on our Platinum cards, as well as our Centurion cards; the latter of which is an invitation-only product.

Absolutely, there are a wide range of other benefits that American Express customers can take advantage of. In addition to the rich benefits provided through Membership Rewards, our customers have access to some presale tickets to some great events around Australia. We have warranty extensions, as well as online fraud guarantee protection. In some of our products, we have included benefits, such as travel insurance or access to a concierge.

The Concierge Service is a service that is available to our Platinum and Centurion card members, which allows them to fulfil some of their requests; everything from booking a table at a restaurant through to things that are a bit more extravagant. We’ve had someone arrange Samurai sword lessons for their 10-year-old son. They do cater for a lot of different requests.

Frequently Asked Questions

I made several purchases during my billing cycle but my Membership Rewards statement doesn’t reflect the points accumulated from those purchases. Why is this?

All of the points you have accumulated will not be reflected on your Rewards statement because the Rewards statement cycle ends approximately 4-6 days before your card statement cycle. The purchases that you made during those 4-6 days will be accurately reflected on your next statement. However, you can always go online to check your most current balance.

I have two Rewards cards. Is it possible to add them together so I can combine my rewards points into one pool?

Unfortunately, no. The only accounts that you can combine are the ones that are enrolled in the same program.

Is it possible for me to enrol my Corporate Card into the Rewards program?

This is possible if your company will allow you to do it. Companies are not eligible to participate in the program but if your company allows you to participate as an individual member, there is no problem with that. You will earn points just like any individual member.
