Earn Maximum Points With AMEX Platinum

This new American Express card provides you with the opportunity to earn the most amount of points around with its 3-2-1 program. Here’s how it works:

  • 3 points – Each time you shop at participating supermarkets, you are able to earn 3 points for each dollar you spend.
  • 2 points – When you gas up at the next petrol station with you card, you will be able to receive 2 points for each dollar from your purchase.
  • 1 point - Other purchases made with this card can make a difference because you are matched dollar for dollar for any other purchases not made at petrol stations or supermarkets.
  • 0.5 point – You will even earn half a point when you use your card to pay for government utilities, insurance, bills from telecommunications providers and charges from government bodies. American Express Platinum Cardholders can earn half a point per dollar spent.

This allows you to earn the maximum amount of points off of purchases that you would make anyway. Your everyday spending will allow you to redeem points for flights or for over 1,500 other choices in merchandise or entertainment options.

AMEX Platinum will show its appreciation for your business by giving you 10,000 rewards bonus points if you spend more than $500 in the first 2 months of your card membership. This is AMEX’s generous welcome gift to you.

I notice you have domestic cover international cover, Transport inconvenience cover and Transport accident cover. I take it this is all complimentary when you use Amex to buy flights etc.
Can you also explain what is covered under each of these components– the Overseas Medical Emergency Expenses and Repatriation benefit. This allows you up to $2,500,000 in the event of an emergency and a $10,000 benefit for travel cancellation. You receive up to $10,000 for baggage and up to $1,000,000 for Personal Liability.

This article states in the top summary that there are interest free days …”up to 55 days”, whereas under “Fees and Repayments” it states that interest is charged from the purchase date. Which is correct? If the latter, then it means that no matter if the out standing balance is paid by the due date, there would be interest charges to pay. Cheers, Vic G

Your spouse is covered provided they meet the definition provided under the terms or conditions: “A card members husband, wife, fiancée or a de facto or life partner”, that you have lived with continuously for a period greater than six months. 2. Is travel insurance free if fares not purchased with card?

    • Staff
      Jeremy | March 9, 2012

      Hi,

Thanks for your question. The American Express states that you will be eligible for the insurance benefits when you pay for travel on your card so you will have to pay for the tickets to be eligible for the travel insurance. As far as we know there are no age restrictions on who the cover is provided to if you are the card holder. Cover for dependent children ends at age 21. Cheers.

Hi Sally. If you’re looking at applying for a credit card jointly, you should check this page on which credit cards allow joint account holders. If one person is applying for a card, then only one income will be considered; however, if two parties are applying jointly for a credit card then both incomes will be taken into account. I’m trying to get another credit card for travel to earn frequent flyer points, however my annual income is less than the minimum..however mine and my brother income is combined, as he is on dsp and I his carer. Is there any considerations for this as we are deemed not to be ‘in a relationship’. I know its unusual situation but just curious if there is any allowances for such.
    Thanks.

    • Staff
      Jacob | April 5, 2013

Hi Mathew. THanks for the question and apologies for the time it’s taken to reply. American Express do not allow joint primary cardholders. Credit cards that allow joint primary cardholders take both applicant’s income into consideration, liability is also shared. Another option is to apply for a frequent flyer credit card with a lower annual income requirement and add your brother to the account as an additional cardholder. This way, spend, and rewards earning, on all cards will be credited to the main account, and you can book flights etc. in your or your brother’s name. Jacob.

      thanks for the question!

According to American Express this free flight could be used from Sydney to Adelaide, or from Perth to Sydney. As always the flight offer comes with additional terms and conditions, so this could change and depends upon availability. For more information it could be useful to call American Express directly, or visit their website.

    • Staff
      Adrian | September 4, 2012

      Hi Hamish,
Complimentary travel insurance is only triggered on this card of the flights themselves are paid for on the card. Paying for rental car hire on this card will not give you insurance for your rental car.

    • Staff
      Jacob | November 5, 2012

Hi Brett. The American Express / MasterCard combination is most common with rewards cards. This is so because providers will offer an American Express card as well as a MasterCard to give cardholders more of an opportunity to earn rewards points – American Express will accrue at a higher rate in most cases. Please visit the rewards credit card comparison page and look for the pictures that have two cards next to each other or one behind another – these are dual card accounts. Hope this helps.

Baggage in excess to the 23kgs included in the promotion will attract additional fees, see virginaustralia.com for more information. Hello Tim,
      thanks for the question.

The Platinum Edge credit card allows cardholders to add an additional supplementary card to their account at no extra cost. This means both a cardholder and their partner could each have a card. This would be based on the primary cardholder’s income and would share the same credit limit. This card is not able to applied for using a combined income.

Another question: what if I apply for one card on my income (97K), and then me and my partner apply for a second card on our joint income (130K). Would this be permitted?

I currently have a Westpac American Express Card that has accumulated points. Westpac have notified me that they are capping points to 5000 starting June 2013. Is it possible for me to get a new American Express card that will continue to accumulate points with my original points instead of having to at zero again with a new card?

      Hello Colleen,
      thanks for the question!

As long as both cards earn American Express Membership Rewards (MR) points then you can transfer them from your old card to your new card. During the application process for the new card there’ll be a tick box which asks if you already have an existing American Express card. After ticking this box you’ll need to provide your card number and the points will transfer.

      I hope this helps,
      Marc.

Odd question: What is the design of the card? Is it plastic? Is there a border around it?

    • Staff
      Jacob | April 3, 2013

Ty. Most cards are made from PVCA plastics. There’s a picture of the review and application page that gives a good indication of what the card looks like: silver, blue stripe down the right of the card, American Express logo across the front. Not sure about the boarder. Jacob.

In regards to the free flight. Can one years flight be rolled over into the next so you can take a spouse or child on the second ticket.

    Thanks

Hi Jay. Thanks for your question. According to the terms and conditions, page 29. (I’ve sent the document to your email), ‘You are entitled to one Flight in each full year of Platinum Reserve Credit Card membership. A year is 365 consecutive days, starting on the date your Platinum Reserve Credit Card is issued or any
anniversary of that date. Your Flight must be booked before the end of each year. Flight benefits cannot be carried forward to any subsequent year.’ Jacob.

With a David Jones Amex card you get 1.5 Kris flyer points at the supermarket per dollar, do you get the same with a platinum edge card or do you get 3 Kris flyer points per dollar, also is the 10000 bonus points worth 10000 kris flyer points.

Hi Chris. Thanks for your question. You’re referring to the conversion rate between American Express Membership Rewards and Kris Flyer Miles? It’s 1:1. It’s the same for all cards that are linked to the American Express Membership Rewards Program. So if you were to get 10,000 American Express Membership Rewards Points it would equal 10,000 KrisFlyer Miles. Check this page for information about transfer rates between American Express Membership Rewards and their transfer partners. Jacob.

Hi. I’m wondering if the minimum income is negotiable? I earn $47K part-time, and in conjunction with my partners pay (who will also be using card) exceeds the minimum. We would like to take advantage of the rewards.

    Kind Regards, Jess.

      Jacob | May 3, 2013

Hi Jess. Thanks for your question. The minimum income requirement is not negotiable; however, if you both apply as joint primary cardholders, you can use your combined income to apply for a card. This page has information on which providers allow this, and which do not. Let me know how it goes. Jacob.

Does this card – amex platinum edge have a balance transfer? If so what are the terms? I see reference to it but no figures. Also sorry to sound stupid but is amex readily accepted in supermarkets such as woolies, coles and at big w, target, service stations? I have never used an amex card before obviously. What might be best to ask is where is it not accepted? If I apply for this card, I can get an additional card holder for my husband yes? Is this fee free? I thought I read it was or is his card subject to the annual fee as well? Would there be difficultly booking us both on the same complementary free virgin flight each year. ie obviously only the one flight would be free, the other we’d have to pay for. Thankyou

      Jacob | May 13, 2013

Hi Juliet. Thanks for your question. American Express do not currently offer balance transfer promotions to their cards. There is no extra cost for a supplementary card. I’ve sent the terms and conditions of the free flight offer to your email, you should review this document before making any decisions. You should be able to get your husband on the same flight; however, all seats are subject to availability. American Express is accepted in a number of place, however, there are merchants that do not accept this type of card. Supermarkets do, some pubs etc. do not. Unfortunately there is no register when you can find out who does and doesn’t, you will have to ask before you go to use the card. Jacob.

    Hi

Please can you let me know if domestic car hire insurance excess is covered by this credit card?

    Many thanks
    Jon

    • Staff
      Jacob | May 20, 2013

Hi Jon. Car rental excess cover is not an included benefit within the American Express Platinum Edge Credit Card Complimentary Insurance Policy. It is; however, offered with some ANZ Credit Cards and Westpac Credit Cards. Let us know if you would like more information about this. Jacob.
