American Express Gold Ascent Card

Best AMEX No Annual Fee Card

The AMEX Gold Ascent Card is a no annual fee rewards card like no other. With complimentary enrolment in Membership Rewards Ascent you can start earning 1 membership reward points for every $2 you spend immediately. You can then redeem your rewards points towards flights on 7 leading airlines and premium rewards.

  • $0 annual fee
  • 0% p.a. for 6 months (reverts to 20.74% p.a.) on purchases
  • 44 days interest free
  • Minimum Income Requirement of $40,000 p.a.
  • 24/7 online account access

The American Express no annual fee credit card is one of those no fee cards that does ask that you make a few compromises.

There are no interest-free days, so you cannot avoid paying some interest even if you pay off your balance in full every month, and neither is there any balance transfer deal currently available.

You will also not find the widespread acceptance of American Express as you do with Visa or MasterCard.

Having said that, the rewards system with this card does offer discounts of 50% on Blue Sky Flights until 2010, including complimentary domestic and international travel insurance.

These are the benefits of the American Express no annual fee credit card so you can assess whether it is the right card for you:

American Express Gold Ascent Features

  • No annual fee
  • A credit limit of up to $25,000
  • Supplementary cards at no extra cost
  • No points expiry for as long as your account remains current
  • Free domestic and international travel insurance for you and your family
  • Fly 365 days a year – book at least thirty days in advance to secure your seat

About no annual fee credit cards:

No annual fee credit cards are normally best-suited to those people who do not want to pay for a card they may not use very much. The only potential problem is that the regular APR on these cards ranges for 16% to 20%, which is up amongst the higher interest rates. You will need to assess whether saving on the annual fee is worth the higher price you may have to pay in interest should you not manage to keep a clear balance throughout the year.

A no annual fee credit card will not suit everyone, though. High earners will have no issue with paying an annual fee because it will allow them the higher credit limits and extra perks of Gold and Platinum credit cards.

Whether you choose the American Express no annual fee credit card or some other, make sure you do some comparisons first. In a recent survey, only 6% of Australians said they bothered to check out a credit card comparison site before making a credit card application. Around 50% only applied to their own bank. There are some excellent deals out there, and you may find that you can avoid an annual fee and still not have to compromise on any of the other features you most value in a credit card.
