Credit card fees and charges can wreck havoc with the finances of many consumers if they are not properly informed and prepared.

There has been a lot of fuss made on the subject of credit card fees both here and abroad, so ANZ credit card fees have been made as simple as possible to understand. The problem has not just been with the levels of fees imposed for various misdemeanours, but in the way the fees have not been easy to fathom, or have been hidden amongst the fine print.

Being cynical, it has been a financially worthwhile exercise for credit card companies to mystify their fees in the past, because customers are less able to avoid charges that they are unaware of. However, since the fuss, credit card companies that continue to do this run the risk of alienating and losing customers. For this reason, ANZ has produced a page on its website devoted to explaining all about ANZ credit card fees.

ANZ credit card fees to avoid

The main two are Overlimit and Late Payment Fees.

Overlimit Fees are payable if a debit to your account takes your balance beyond your credit limit. This can occur when the customer and the debit both meet ANZ’s criteria for the Informal Overlimit facility, thus allowing the transaction to be processed. (This excluding ANZ Visa PAYCARD and ANZ Rewards Visa PAYCARD accounts.)

Late Payment Fees are payable when your minimum monthly payment is not made by the due date as shown on your statement.
ANZ credit card fees commitment

ANZ credit card fees are subject to ANZ’s own code of conduct regarding charges to the customer’s account:

  • Full disclosure - This means ANZ will ensure clear and simple information is provided about the fees that apply to your account when you receive your credit card, and that this information is always available on the ANZ website
  • To keep fees simple - An ANZ credit card fee is charged as one single flat amount for both Overlimit and Late Payment Fees (except for the fee waiver on ANZ Access Basic accounts for holders in receipt of Government benefits).

To help you avoid fees – ANZ will help you avoid credit card fees by giving you information and options to this end:

  1. ANZ CardPay Direct, which is a way to make your credit card payments automatically from a nominated Australian bank account
  2. The option to not exceed your credit card limit on electronically authorised purchases and cash transactions
  3. Regular advice on ways you can avoid ANZ credit card fees, if you are affected by them

To apply fees fairly

  1. You will not have to pay the first Overlimit or Late Payment Fee if you contact ANZ to discuss the matter and how to avoid it happening again
  2. You will not be charged more than one Overlimit Fee in any one monthly statement cycle
  3. ANZ credit card customers in receipt of Government benefits who hold an ANZ Access Basic account will not be charged Overlimit or Late Payment Fees
