Most credit cards these days are instant decision credit cards. Apart from one or two of the more prestigious platinum level credit cards, which may require a personal phone call to apply, any credit card you can track down online should give you the option of making an instant decision application.

This means that you are normally informed with sixty seconds whether your application has been approved in principle, or rejected.

The application process will be far easier if you have certain documents to hand before beginning. This is because the security systems on these credit card sites have a time-out feature that will wipe your details if you leave the screen inactive for more than ten minutes or so. This prevents the chance of you wandering off and forgetting about the application, and having someone else come along and see your personal financial details. Therefore, it is not worth starting the application process for an instant decision credit card if you are then going to have to go and search through your drawers for half an hour collating the relevant details. Once you do start, the process should take no more than fifteen minutes.

Most instant decision credit card applications will require the following:

  • Your personal details, including name, address and driver’s licence, if applicable.
  • Your contact details.
  • Your employer’s name, address and telephone contact details.
  • Your accountant’s details, if self-employed.
  • Your financial details, including income, expenditure and assets.

Once you have input all this information, their automated system will assess it all and run a credit check on you. You will then be informed of the decision. Bear in mind that this decision has been made by a machine and is based on the answers you have given. These details may need to be verified by the bank or provider, and your identity will certainly require verification in person at a local branch because this is required by law.

Before any application for an instant decision credit card is made, you should always have made a thorough comparison of the market. You should not behave like nearly 60% of the Australian public and apply only to your existing bank. This cuts out the possibility of finding the best credit card, unless you are lucky enough to be a customer of the bank with the best deal on the type of card you are after. That is a very hit-and-miss approach to making what is a pretty important financial decision.

Also remember that you must meet the basic criteria for any credit card application: you must be at least eighteen years of age; you must be an Australian resident (exceptions can be found); and you must be earning a certain annual income, which will be the deciding factor for which level of instant decision credit card you are eligible for – standard, gold or platinum.
