Aussie Credit Card Fees & Charges

Posted February 7th, 2010 and last modified April 20th, 2010

Learn more about Aussie credit card fees & charges and how they can affect you in various spending situations. Credit card fees can pose a rude awakening, especially if you don’t expect them before you use your card.

The Aussie credit card is available with an annual fee of only $49, but there are some additional credit card fees that you should know about. Many of them can be avoided if you are aware of them.

Aussie credit card feeds for cash advances:

If you need to take out a cash advance you will be charged a 2% fee. For any cash advances that are made at a bank, ATM or financial institution located overseas, a charge of four dollars minimum will apply. When the cash advance is processed, as long as the account is in balance based on credit, the amount of the credit will offset the cash advance amount in the calculation of the 2% fee. You will still have to pay the minimum fee for cash advances made at overseas branches and ATMs.

As well, the calculation of the 2% fee will be referenced to the Overseas Transaction Fee, operator fees for an ATM and the amount of the cash advance, and added to the transaction. Any overseas transactions will be charged a $4.00 minimum fee.

A surcharge may be imposed by some EFTPOS locations and ATMs overseas. A $4.00 minimum fee will be charged for any cash advances at an Australian financial institution or bank.

It is hard to avoid these cash advance charges, but you can end up paying the minimum fee if your account is in credit when the processing takes place for the cash advance. This fee is only applied to the amount that goes over the credit balance.

Fee for a Late Payment

You will be charged $35 if you fail to pay the “amount due immediately” amount or minimum monthly payment on your statement. You will not have to pay this charge if you make sure to pay the monthly minimum shown on your statement each month.

Fee for Overlimit

An overlimit fee of $35 will apply if the account balance goes over your credit limit during the time period of your statement. At the end of your statement period this charge will be added. It is very easy to avoid these credit card feeds if you spend within your limit. You can monitor your spending online or by phone, and you can make an application to raise your credit limit.

Fee for a Duplicate Statement

The fee for requesting a duplicate statement is $14 for each one required. If you need a statement that was processed within the last three months, you can look it up online for free.

Fee for Priority

You will be charged $50 for a priority issue of a PIN mailer or a a new Aussie credit card. If you do not want to pay this fee and you can wait, it usually only takes 2-5 business days to receive one.

Fee for Overseas Transaction

The fee for an overseas transaction is 3% of the Australian or foreign currency value. This fee is unavoidable.

Fee for Payment Dishonour

Any payment that is dishonoured or needs to be reversed will be charged $12. This fee can be easily avoided by paying your statement on time and by ensuring that you have the funds to cover the payment in your account.

Fee for Additional Cardholder

There will be an extra charge of $10 per year per additional cardholder. This is an unavoidable charge if you want to add another cardholder, but much cheaper than opening a separate account.

These credit card feeds and charges are quite reasonable, and in most cases can be avoided if you do smart shopping and planning.
