Just came back from breakfast with @SilkCharm and learnt more about Social Media in 2 hours than I have in all the time I have been involved.

Love the tone of your article and the balance between being the “poster child” of the Anti-Spam movement and you acknowledging that I actual do know how to eek a $$ from the net.

Re ownership – it’s all in the name. PM could pose a question but unlikely. It doesn’t matter which email account was used to create the handle – you can change email really easily on Twitter(I’ve just tried it).

And on the question of Julia Gillard wanting to take over the twitter account and its followers; whose to say that Kev’s followers would automatically follow her? It depends whether you think they want to follow the PM or the person? And if they want to follow the PM they’ll follow her anyway.

I was thinking about the twitter account – just say KRudd left the ALP, and his account was created using an ALP e-mail account – it could pose a problem for him.

Also… with an August election predicted.. I wonder if Julia Gillard would be trying to push Kevin aside, and take over that twitter account? Almost 1 million twitter followers… that’s an amazing resource for an election drive.

… only time will tell!

Just on your question re Kevin Rudd and ownership of his Twitter account, I have some ideas to put forward. I manage a law firm in the social media space but would like to emphasize that I am not a lawyer! I asked our Principal, Andrew Bland, what he thought and his general comments are worth repeating.

As this is a private account ie not a Labor party or federal government account, Kev could argue ownership. This has interesting implications for companies; if you do want ownership of Twitter accounts, make sure your tweeters are tweeting from an account that references the company in its’ name. ie @kruddausfedgovt (I know it’s too long) may arguably be owned by the federal government. If the Twitter account is in a persons name, it would be difficult to argue that the account could be owned by anyone other than that person.

That is a great call and certainly an oversight by me. There were so many more memorable twitter users I wanted to mention, that I’ve found particularly interesting / and helpful over my time using twitter.

If there is a big hole in this, it’s that you’ve missed out on journalists. As we saw in the last week, where Twitter threatened to melt down with the #spill buzz, it’s the press, as much as anyone else that are using Twitter and the like very effectively.

I’d have considered putting @latikambourke in that category, for example. She and the other Parly press gallery tweeps are very vocal and effective.

Anyway, just a thought for perhaps a better category choice than “Banking and Finance” which seems awfully obscure to me.

We’re really on a steep learning curve trying to understand social media, and still have quite a journey yet.

It did take a lot of time to put together, and because it took so long I had to re-jig the Kevin Rudd content, as it was written prior to the leadership change! haha.

What do you think will happen to his social media accounts – do you think they are his property or ALP’s?
