Bank of Melbourne Credit Cards

bom-logo

Bank of Melbourne offers competitive credit card features with up to 18 months on balance transfers, 0% on purchases, no annual fees and platinum cardholder benefits.

Operating under the Westpac umbrella along with St.George and BankSA, the Bank of Melbourne is the local bank for all Victorians. There are hundreds of Bank of Melbourne branches, banking centres and ATMs in every corner of the state. As a result of their parent company Westpac, you will find that they share many of the same credit products as the big bank and its sister financial institutions. This includes offers like rewards credit cards with Amplify points and balance transfer deals.

You don’t have to be a Victorian resident to apply for a Bank of Melbourne credit card though as their products are available for all eligible applicants in Australia. This includes a special promotional offer of zero interest when you open a new charge account and transfer your balances. The amount of time you have to pay that balance off will depend on the type of card you choose.

Types of credit cards from Bank of Melbourne

Bank of Melbourne offer credit cards to suit most needs and purposes. Bank of Melbourne low rate and no annual fee credit cards can deliver savings, but if your pockets are a little deeper, Bank of Melbourne also have rewards credit cards that can be linked to the Amplify Rewards or Qantas Frequent Flyer programs.

  • Low rate credit cards

Bank of Melbourne offer two versions of their low rate Vertigo Visa credit card. The annual fee is the main difference here. The Vertigo Platinum also offers insurance, which can save you money and give you peace of mind. Low rate cards are handy if you want to pay down a balance transfer and also make the odd purchase. There are no interest-free days if you carry a balance transfer — interest is charged right away. Low rate credit cards have the lowest purchase rates of interest out of any card type on the market.

  • No annual fee credit cards

The Bank of Melbourne No Annual Fee Credit Card is an option for any customer who wants to take advantage of the flexibility of a credit card without having to worry about paying an annual fee. No annual fee credit cards have a higher purchase rate than a low rate credit card, but you still get interest-free days if you pay your statement in full each month. Keep an eye out for purchase rate promotions on a no annual fee credit card, this gives you access to both product types — no annual fee and low or interest free purchases, even if it is only for a limited period.

How to compare Bank of Melbourne credit cards

Before applying for a Bank of Melbourne credit card, you’ll need to ask yourself the following questions:

  • What are the interest rates? It is not unusual for the interest rate on a cash advance to be slightly higher than the purchase rate, but it should be competitive to what other banks are offering.
  • How much is the cash advance fee? With the Bank of Melbourne, and all banks in the Westpac group, you are not charged a fee when using an ATM in their network. Fees can incur if you use a different bank’s ATM or if you make withdrawals overseas using your Visa credit card.
  • What is the rewards program like? Make sure that the rewards program compliments your existing spending patterns. If you don’t fly with Qantas or shop with any of Bank of Melbourne’s partners, then you’ll find it difficult to earn enough rewards to offset the costs of the card.
  • What is the annual fee? If the value of the rewards you earn doesn’t counteract the annual fee, then you’re not using the card to its full potential.

      Anndy | August 31, 2016

      Hi Tiffy,

      Thanks for your question.

Yes, Bank of Melbourne allows for a balance transfer to a joint credit card account. However, the amount to be transferred should not be from any of the credit cards issued by the Westpac Group (BankSA, Bank of Melbourne, St.George). Please note that with a Bank of Melbourne’s joint credit card account, you will be given individual cards under one account.

      Cheers,
      Anndy

Does BoM charge a transfer fee on the amount being transferred from my existing credit card to a BoM interest free credit card. I’m looking at 18 or 20 months interest free card.

    Thank you

hi good day i got an default on my credit history which was 50 months ago..
was wondering if i can still apply for an credit card??

    • Staff
      Shirley | July 15, 2014

      Hi Nick,

      Thanks for your question.

Generally a default appears on your credit history for a period of 5 years, which is about 60 months.

It’s likely that the default is still on your credit history and so may hinder the chances of your application. You may want to wait another 10 months or so before applying.

      Cheers,
      Shirley

Hi there similar situation here I had a bankruptcy in Oct 2010 subsequently discharged in Oct 2013 so just wondering if I would be able to apply for a credit card in order to rebuild my credit file? Obviously avoiding any lenders that I had debts with previously.

Most lenders here seem to require a ‘good’ credit rating but I’m wondering if any are more lenient/flexible or specialise in poor credit history etc as I earn a good income and assets, working in same job for 12 months. I’m aware I don’t have a Vedascore as I monitor it closely via subscription. Cheers

Hi D, thanks for your inquiry!

In regards to bankruptcy/ defaults on credit files and applying for credit cards, the lending policies and requirements do vary from lender to lender. Having steady employment/ income and assets definitely helps the application process especially after bankruptcy. It would be best to contact the Bank of Melbourne or the respective lender at a local branch to discuss your options.

      I hope this helps.

      Cheers,

      Jonathan
