BankSA Amplify Rewards Credit Card review

With this rewards card from BankSA, you choose the program that makes sense for you. Travellers will benefit most by earning points towards the Qantas Frequent Flyer program, or be a part of the Amplify program and redeem your points for a wide range of merchandise. If you meet the deadline, you will also be eligible on 0% p.a. interest on your balance transfer and 1% p.a. interest on purchases, giving twice the typical amount of saving opportunities. The card is issued by Visa, giving you a chance to accumulate points from purchasing in millions of locations around the globe. There may not be many extras and perks with this card, but if you are looking for a simple and inexpensive way to manage your day to day expenses and earn rewards, this is one way to do it.

Benefits of using a BankSA Amplify Rewards Credit Card

The BankSA Amplify Rewards Credit Card provides you with a number of benefits that make it a valuable option for a rewards credit card:

  • Annual fee. This credit card attracts $0 annual fee in the first year ($79 p.a. thereafter) if you apply before 29 September 2016.
  • Balance transfer offer. Consolidate and manage your debt from this card and get 18 months free of interest accumulation. This gives you plenty of time to work that balance down before it reverts to the standard purchase rate.
  • Purchase rate offer. This credit card offers an introductory interest rate of 1% for 12 months on purchases. Offer ends on 29 September 2016.
  • Rewards program. You get to choose whether to use this card to earn Amplify Points or Qantas Points. With Amplify you get a point per dollar, while the ratio is half a point for each dollar if you choose Qantas. Both programs also offer you ways to earn bonus points through purchases with their partners. With Qantas this will happen twice, first with your Amplify credit card, and then again with the partner. Both programs give you the chance to earn points for flights or valuable merchandise from their online stores, providing you with a great deal of flexibility in how you use your points.
  • Uncapped points. No matter which rewards program you choose, your point earning ability will not be capped.
  • Interest-free days on purchases. After the 12-month interest-free period on purchases ends, you can still get the same benefit with up to 55 days interest-free. In order to qualify you must be paying your balance off in full each month, including any balance transfers.

Features of the BankSA Amplify Rewards Credit Card

There are elements to some of the features of this credit card that will make it stand out. Yet before making a final choice be sure to make comparisons with various cards and determine which suits your needs in the best way:

  • Balance transfer offer. You can transfer your balances without incurring any interest for the first 18 months, if you apply by 29 September 2016. This will then revert to the standard purchase rate of 19.49% p.a. after the introductory period.
  • Cash advance rate. If you use the card to withdraw cash over the counter or at an ATM the balance of that transaction is charged at a rate of 20.24% p.a.
  • Cash advance fee. In addition to interest, cash advances also incur a fee of 2% of the transaction or $2.50, whichever is higher.
  • Foreign transaction fee. 3% of the Australian dollar amount is charged for any transaction based outside of Australia.
  • Minimum credit limit. The minimum amount of credit that will be offered to you is $1,000. This amount could be higher depending on your income and credit history.
  • Additional cardholders. You are allowed 1 additional card at no cost provided that the user is at least 16 years of age.
  • Card type. You will be issued a Visa credit card if approved for this account.

Reward credit cards provide Australians a great way to make their spending count for them. If you want flexibility in your rewards programs, yet a simple account to manage with a number of money savings perks, then the Amplify Rewards card is one to consider.

Hi Kennenth, thanks for your inquiry.

As per BankSa’s Amplify Terms and Conditions, BPAY payments (i.e. bill payments and
other payments made through the BPay Electronic Payments Scheme) will not earn reward points.

For more details, kindly refer to PDF I have sent to your email.

      I hope this helps.

With the Amplify Qantas, is one $1 equal to one frequent flyer?

    • Staff
      Jonathan | March 18, 2015

Hi James, thanks for your inquiry!

The earnings rate for Amplify Rewards points on this card is 1 point per $1 spent. The conversion rate from Amplify Rewards to Qantas points is 1.00 Amplify point to 0.5 Qantas Points.

Foreign Currency Conversion Fee (VISA) = 3% of transaction value

Is this at the official Visa rate or does the bank mark-up the Visa rate and then apply the 3%?

      Hi Malcolm,

      Thanks for your question.

This rate is set by BankSA. You will only be charged this rate for a foreign conversion fee, as they do not add this on top of any rate set by Visa.

      I hope this has helped.

I have a BankSA MasterCard, which has just had the annual fee of $55 taken out. If I wanted to upgrade to Amplify Qantas card with annual fee of $79 – can I just pay the difference to switch cards?

      Hi Michelle.
      Thanks for your question.
Has your annual fee ben reduced as part of a home loan package? If so, you may be able to arrange a discount on a new credit card with the lender, but you will have to speak directly to BankSA to confirm you’re eligibility for a reduced annual fee. They may be able to offer an upgrade to their existing customers.
