Comparison of BankSA Credit Cards
Before we take a look at some of the credit cards in the range, let’s find out a bit more about BankSA.
Who is BankSA?
BankSA has been an integral part of the financial infrastructure of South Australia since 1848. With it’s 160 year history BankSA is the largest financial institution in South Australia and is also the state’s main provider of housing, personal finance and rural banking services. BankSA sponsors major state events and makes donations through its BankSA & Staff Charitable Fund to approximately 100 South Australian and Northern Territory-based charities every year. As mentioned, it’s a proud South Australian institution with the aim of interacting with customers in the simplest way possible.
Far from being just a credit card provider, BankSA deal with everything from basic transaction accounts, through to personal loans, credit cards, and even home loans. They aim to provide products suitable for people of every background and financial standing, be they students, retirees, or business people. Choosing a BankSA credit card, you can be confident that you will always be at the cutting edge, as BankSA prides itself on being a leading innovator, and was the first South Australian bank to provide banking services to customers over the internet.
BankSA also caters to customers in commercial and rural businesses, offering a full range of lending and investment products, merchant card services and EFTPOS, finance services for import and export, and leasing. They also provide an array of services in funds management, life and general insurance, and superannuation and investment.
So what sort of offers can you expect from BankSA?
BankSA Vertigo MasterCard
This credit card is a low rate credit card which offers a balance transfer promotion.
When you transfer an existing credit card debt onto the Vertigo MasterCard you get a rate of 0% p.a. for 12 months. This should give you plenty of time to make some inroads into paying the debt off.
After the 12 month period is over the balance transfer rate will revert to the card’s purchase rate which currently stands at 13.24% p.a., the lowest offered by BankSA. This is a welcome change from some cards where the balance transfer rate reverts to the higher cash advance rate. You also get the benefit of up to 55 days interest free on any purchases you make. This means if you purchase something on the first day of your statement cycle you’ll have 55 days to pay it off before you’re charged interest, provided you pay the balance off in full each month.
There are no rewards program offered with this card but that’s offset by the low annual fee of just $55 p.a. and the low purchase rate mentioned above.
The minimum earning requirement for the card is just making it accessible to those earning a very modest amount, and the low $500 minimum credit limit makes it a good basic card with a low rate. On the whole the card is functional, easy to run, and great if you need a low rate balance transfer.
The BankSA Amplify Card
The BankSA is a flexible rewards card which offers the choice of two rewards programs, and a low rate balance transfer offer of 0.99% p.a. for 6 months. When the 6 months elapses any remaining balances will be calculated at the purchase rate, which is currently 18.74% p.a..
Cardholders have a choice with the BankSA Amplify: earn Amplify points at a rate of 1.00 per $1 spent, or earn Qantas Points on their Frequent Flyer program at the rate of 0.50 per $1 spent.
If you choose to earn points and redeem them for Amplify rewards you can choose from categories such as:
- Domestic Flights
- International flights
- Car hire
- Home wares
- Gift cards
- Electrical appliances
- Electronic devices
- Amusement experiences.
You can also swap them for airline points in programs such as Virgin Australia’s Velocity Frequent Flyer program, Malaysia Airline’s Enrich program or even Singapore Airlines’ KrisFlyer program.
On the other hand, you can also earn Qantas Points on their Frequent Flyer program and redeem them for Classic Awards flights on Qantas or partner flights, upgrade your airfares or redeem points for the large number of products in the Frequent Flyer store.
The Amplify Credit Card offers the same 55 days interest free as the Vertigo MasterCard, giving you the possibility of a large amount of time to pay off your purchases before interest is charged. The annual fee is $79 p.a., which is relatively low for a reward card of this type.
The balance transfer process
If you are applying for a BankSA credit card which offers a balance transfer promotion, you can ask to transfer the balance at the time of application, and the balance transfer will begin when the account becomes active. Once the introductory low rate period expires, the remaining balance will revert to the normal purchase interest rate.
It normally takes around two weeks for the process to be completed, and new customers will need to have their identity verified before their card can be activated and the balance transfer process can begin. Until that time, the debt will remain with the old card provider and you must continue to pay them.
The BankSA Platinum Credit Card
If you want a premium credit card that gives you that little bit extra then the BankSA Platinum Credit Card could be for you. Not only can you make use of platinum features like a concierge service which can save you time and money, you also get access to a suite of complimentary insurance policies. You’ll also get a low rate for balance transfers of 0% p.a. for 9 months, after which the balance transfer rate will revert not back to the cash advance rate, but to the purchase rate, which is 0% p.a. for 12 months (reverts to 15.99% p.a.).
There’s no reward scheme attached to this card, however there are a host of added bonuses. You receive complimentary travel insurance, purchase insurance, extended warranty on eligible items, and transport accident insurance which could save you a packet when you travel overseas or purchase items.
Like the other cards offered by BankSA, the Platinum Credit Card offers cardholders 55 days interest free, so once again if you like the odd shopping spree with the option of paying off over the month, you can do it with this product.
The annual fee for this card is $89 p.a., which is reasonable considering the added incentives on offer.
The BankSA No Annual Fee Card
There is no low promotional rate offered with this card so if you’re looking to do a balance transfer you may be better looking elsewhere.
The standard rate of interest is 20.49% p.a. from the start, however there’s no annual fee whatsoever. This feature makes this card ideal for someone who doesn’t spend regularly on credit, or perhaps someone who only really keeps the card for emergencies.
There is no interest free period and no reward scheme so this really is a card aimed at those who might not use credit very often.
As you can see there is something for most types of spenders in the BankSA range. A basic card which is cheaper to run with low annual fee and low interest rates, a no annual fee card for those who keep their credit card for emergencies only, and a Platinum card for those that like the luxuries that are part of the deal.
There’s also a gold card and a business card in the range, so whatever your situation, if you need a new credit card then BankSA should be at the top of your list.
