Bankwest Overview

Bankwest is the short name of Bank of Western Australia, which is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia. It is a full service bank, meaning it is active in all segments of the market, lending money across the business, rural, housing and personal markets, and in its home state of Western Australia, Bankwest is responsible for around one quarter of all bank advances and deposits.

Bankwest boasts over 900,000 customers who are served through an expansive network of local branches, direct and third-party distribution channels, electronic banking facilities, and associated agencies, and it operates on a 24/7 basis via its telephone and Internet banking services.

Thanks to its excellent performance, Bankwest has been the recipient of various awards, including the 2008 Bank of the Year at the AFR Smart Investor Blue Ribbon Awards, Lender of the Year at the 2008 Mortgage and Finance Association of Australia (MFAA) Excellence Awards, and 2008 Regional Bank of the Year at the Australian Banking & Finance Magazine Awards. It was also awarded gold for its TeleNet Saver, Regular Saver, Bankwest tddirect, Kids' Bonus Saver, Hero Transaction Account, and Zero MasterCard in Money Magazine's 2008 Best of the Best awards.

Bankwest is a powerful, well-established business with a healthy capital base and liquidity position, and is an Authorised Deposit-taking Institution (ADI) within Australia, fully regulated by the APRA. It is an active participant in the Australian interstate banking market, and since becoming part of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia Group, Bankwest's position has been further solidified by an improved credit rating, and its ability to offer customers the best and most innovative banking products has been enhanced.

History of Bankwest

Bankwest began life in 1895 as the Agricultural Bank of Western Australia, a lending institution set up by Western Australia's state government. Its purpose was to support the state's agricultural industry by lending money to farmers, using government bonds to offset its liabilities.

Fifty years later, in 1945, the Agricultural Bank of Western Australia became a fully-fledged commercial bank, later changing its name to the Rural and Industries Bank of Western Australia (R&I Bank). Following on from that, the bank continued its expansion with operations in both the commercial and retail banking sectors right across the state.

In 1990, R&I Bank was incorporated, and four years later it changed its name again to its current identity of the Bank of Western Australia Limited, commonly abbreviated to Bankwest. A year later the bank was privatised and the Bank of Scotland bought Bankwest, which was soon listed on the Australian Stock Exchange. The Bank of Scotland merged with the Halifax Group in 2001, forming a company called HBOS plc, which ended up selling Bankwest to the Commonwealth Bank of Australia in 2008 for AUD$2.1 billion.

Bankwest credit cards include cards that offer low rates of interest, no annual fees, and great rewards schemes. Whatever type of credit card you are looking for, Bankwest will provide the perfect solution for you.

Bankwest started out as the Agricultural Bank of Western Australia after being founded by the government with the aim of helping struggling farmers. It opened its first branch in Perth in 1895 and has grown over more than a century to currently serve over 600,000 customers across many states. Exactly 100 years after it appeared, Bankwest was acquired by The Bank of Scotland 1995, when shares were offered to the public for the first time. Bankwest is now owned by HBOS (Halifax/Bank of Scotland), which is one of the world's largest financial groups.

Amongst the Bankwest credit card family is the Bankwest Lite MasterCard, which is widely considered one of the best credit cards in the country with an interest rate a pip below 11%. It is also offering an amazing 1.99% p.a. for 9 months on balance transfers - again, an offer that is extremely difficult to beat. This allows you to make a huge saving on the current interest charges you are paying on your debt. The annual fee is also comparably low and you naturally enjoy a 55 day interest-free period on your purchases.

Bankwest credit cards can be used at over 21 million locations around the globe, and cash can be withdrawn from ATMs the world over so you will never be strapped for cash in a foreign country. You can also set up bill payment on your Bankwest credit card so you can more easily stay on top of your home and business expenses. In fact, the online management of your Bankwest credit card is a cinch and even includes a Switching Tool that allows you to contact merchants and let them know to switch payments from your old credit card to your new Bankwest credit card.
