Bendigo Bank Overview

Bendigo Bank is a long standing and well respected Australian bank. Headquartered where it got its start in the city of Bendigo, it strives to provide the best products to help  its customers meet their goals. In addition to helping customers they also provide services that aim to help the community meet it needs and provide better opportunities for its citizens.

Bendigo Bank began during the Australian gold rush in the 1800's. At that time many families settled along the Bendigo goldfield and lived in tents and shelters which was inadequate housing to say the least. In an effort to improve these settlers living situation some of the communities well-off citizens began giving out loans so that the miners could purchase or build their own homes. From these loans came the  birth of Bendigo Permanent Land and Building Society.

Along with the city, the Bendigo Building society began to grow. Customers were pleased with the level of ethics in dealing with financial management. They were so successful that they even so profits during the Great Depression era. This success is largely due to a policy, pioneered by manager Frank Perrow, that strives to support individuals in own a home. A big part of this policy, especially during the Great Depression, was to allow borrowers to keep their homes even when they were unable to pay the mortgage every month. Instead of constantly asking for loan payments, Bendigo accepted them when customers had the financial means to pay. This policy actually helped the building society grow.

Throughout the 20th century Bendigo Bank continued to grow by acquiring other firms and by expanding the products and services it offers. By 1990, their reputation was so strong that the Australian government requested their assistance in helping other building societies deal with the crisis caused by the downfall of the Pyramid Building Society of Victoria. By 1995 Bendigo Permanent Land and Building Society was converted into Bendigo Bank.
