Which is the best Debit Card? We compare the best debit cards
Posted September 1st, 2009 and last modified May 13th, 2011Facts To Look For When Researching and comparing Debit Cards to find the best debit card.
As with any financial decision it will take some research to find out the best debit card to suit your purposes. Debit cards have become even more popular than credit cards now and because of this, banks have been coerced into offering rewards and features to entice people to use their cards.
It is not so much the use of the card that the bank is after, it is the attached bank account that goes with it.
Here are some questions it would pay to answer when looking for the best debit card:
- What areas of use will your debit card have?
- Will you be using if for online shopping only with no need for a physical card?
- Will you need it to access cash from ATM’s and how often?
- Will a prepaid debit card be better for you rather than have one attached to your savings or cheque account? They are easier to get if you have no credit history and are often more secure which can be good if you are travelling or you have dependents using an extra card.
- Will you be using your card overseas on a regular basis?
- What arrangement do you need for topping up your debit card?
- Will you use any of the special features being offered with some of the cards?
As far as the fees on a debit card are concerned, check this out very carefully. There are ‘no fee’ and ‘low fee’ cards so know the difference. Are there extra fees for any of the purposes that you want for the card, like a considerable number of ATM withdrawals? Are transaction fees applicable? Check out any concessions that may be applicable like pensioner fees, student fees, etc.
What access do you have to the issuer? Are they available 24/7 because if you are travelling overseas the time changes may mean you are trying to contact the bank but cannot get any service? What security features do they have? It is important to know that they stand behind what they say and not just put something in print.
Check out all the rewards features as there could be quite substantial savings, under certain circumstances, to suit your lifestyle. What insurances and warranties are covered with the card? Sometimes it is what might seem a small feature that could turn out to be a great benefit or saving to you personally.
Having looked at all the features, benefits and fees make your decision on the best debit card and enjoy the fact that by using a debit card you are not running up a big credit card debt.
