What type of rewards do you want?

Looking to become a frequent flyer?

Choose between credit cards linked to:

The best credit card earn rates are typically found with cards that are directly linked to the frequent flyer program. When rewards points are transferred between a financial institution’s rewards program and the frequent flyer program, for many cards, the conversion rate will leave you worse off.

After bank’s or lender’s rewards?

Get a credit card that’s linked to the bank’s or lender’s rewards program and you can access more than just flight rewards. Redeem points for gift cards, electronics and more. These rewards programs are often also linked to travel companies, so – much like frequent flyer points – they can be used to earn and redeem flights for travel rewards.

Choose a credit card linked to:

Do you prefer shopping and petrol rewards?

Choose a credit card linked to:

These cards offer points on everyday purchases and an earn rate of 1:1 is pretty common. If you shop with one of these cards though, such as the Everyday rewards and Everyday Money credit card at Woolworths or a flybuys linked card at Coles, you can earn bonus rates which can double or triple the number of points you can earn.

You can also redeem points for money off your grocery bill, petrol discounts, plus experiences like theme park tickets. These rewards programs have the wide variety of point redemption options if you’re interested in more than just travel rewards.

Covering the annual fee

Calculate whether the card is of value by considering the relationship between the card’s annual fee, how much you spend on the card and the value of the rewards.

Take this example: A Qantas Frequent Flyer credit card has an annual fee of $200 and an earn rate of 1:1. Hypothetically, let’s say that 15,000 Qantas Point points would get you a one-way flight from Sydney to Melbourne and Qantas Points are worth about a cent. You’d need to spend $15,000 on that card to get your Sydney to Melbourne flight and probably double that to cover the cost of the annual fee.

If the value you get from the annual fee is greater than the cost of the card, these types of cards could be a good addition to your wallet.

If the rewards don’t cover the annual fee, forget about a rewards or frequent flyer credit card and go with another product.

High earn rate for a high annual fee

It’s not all black and white. Cards with a high annual fee generally have a high earn rate. Once the rewards have broken even, premium and platinum credit cards provide some of the best return in value. It comes down to how much you regularly spend on the card.

Perks like complimentary insurance, bonus points on signup, membership fee waivers and interest-free promotions make a rewards card product more desirable to applicants. Factor these features into your assessment of the card’s annual fee:

  • A no annual fee rewards card means there’s no annual fee breakeven point, everything you spend returns as rewards value. These cards are ideal for small spenders.
  • Premium cards have a high earn rate at the price of a high annual fee. Big spenders benefit from a high earn rate once the card fees have been recouped in the form of rewards.
  • Use a frequent flyer card for frequent flyer points and a bank’s rewards card if you want non-flight rewards.

Expiry and capping

Also pay attention to whether there’s a cap on the number of points you can earn with the rewards program.

Some programs only allow you to earn a finite number of points per year, while other programs have a reduced earn rate once the cardholder reaches a threshold.

A cap on points restricts the value you could get from a program in a year.

Also consider whether the points expire. Qantas Frequent Flyer Points, for example, will expire if no points have been earned or redeemed in the preceding three years. If you plan to save up your points for an overseas trip or another large reward, you may lose out if the points expire before you have a chance to redeem them.

Credit cards compared by rewards type

Compare the different types of rewards credit cards available on the market by considering the type of cards and rewards that will best benefit you.

Frequent flyer rewards credit card

Get points back when you make a purchase. Use the points to pay for a flight.

Read this if you want to join a frequent flyer program

Compare frequent flyer cards based on the value of the frequent flyer program.

Look at the annual fee of the product, fees to join the frequent flyer program, additional features like interest free days and estimate how much you’re likely to spend on the credit card in a year.

Using these figures, you can find out how many rewards points you’re likely to earn in a year.

If the return from the frequent flyer program is greater than the cost of the credit card, a frequent flyer credit card could be worth your time.

If not, you may want to consider a low rate or low fee credit card.

About the Qantas Frequent Flyer Program

Qantas has the largest frequent flyer program in Australia. And is linked to more rewards credit cards than any other frequent flyer program.

The program has a joining fee of $89. This is usually waived when you sign up for a credit card linked with Qantas (check the fine print or read our guide). Earn points by making purchases on a credit card that rewards with Qantas frequent flyer points, or earn points with partner merchants. Paying your Optus phone bill earns points, for example. Qantas Points don’t expire as long as you’ve earned or redeemed points once in the last three years.

As well as earning extra points, jet-setters benefit from Qantas frequent flyer ‘status’. The more you fly, the higher your status. Gold status unlocks extra perks like lounge access and a boost to your frequent flyer earning power.

Redeem Qantas Points for flights:

Qantas points can be redeemed ‘classic’ and ‘any seat rewards’ seats. Qantas classic awards cost less points to book, but don’t earn status points. There’s a limited allocation of the Classic Awards seats per flight and some popular routes are not covered.

Velocity frequent flyer reward credit cards

Velocity, the main alternative to the Qantas Frequent Flyer Program, is free to join.

Points can be earned on the ground using a Velocity branded credit card or at one of their partners. They’re earned in the air too. Purchasing Velocity products will land you extra points as well as Velocity status credits. Your points won’t expire provided your account has been active once in the last three years.

At the time of writing, Velocity can’t boast the same international reach as Qantas, but Velocity
does let its members share points among family members a little more liberally than it’s rivals.

Redeem Velocity Points for flights

‘Reward seat’ and ‘any seat’ tickets are available. Rewards seats cost less points to book, there’s a limited number of these seats available. Any seat rewards are widely available.

Singapore Airlines & Emirates

Credit cards linked to the Krisflyer and Skywards frequent flyer programs are appealing if you’re a frequent traveller to the Arab Emirates or Singapore.

Emirates has a codeshare partnership with Qantas, which allows members to use points to book flights on either program. But Emirates has a limited number of partner airlines as it’s not currently part of Oneworld or the Star Alliance.

Krisflyer is part of the StarAlliance. Krisflyer points can be used to book awards seats on Star Alliance airlines. Points can be redeemed for flights on a number of routes.

Balance transfer rewards credit cards

Save money on interest repayments with a balance transfer

What you need to know about using a balance transfer promotion on a rewards credit card

Many in the market for a rewards card are also carrying a credit card balance. Balance transfers offer a promotional interest rate for a period of time on any credit card balance you bring over to a credit card. Transfer your credit card balance when you open a new rewards credit card to save on interest repayments.

Note the following if you’re transferring your credit card balance to a new rewards credit card. You don’t earn points on the balance transfer balance you bring to the card. Balance transfers are considered a cash transaction.

The same annual fee vs. spend considerations apply here too. Look for the lowest balance transfer interest rate over a time period you’re comfortable with paying back the card.

Gold, platinum and black rewards credit cards

Premium features give a kick to your points balance

But are the extra perks worth paying for?

Gold, platinum and black credit cards are packed with features like a high earn rate but come at a price. These cards have a high annual fee which means there only a good option for people who are spending a significant amount on the card. Although you generally have to have a high income to get one of these cards, there are ‘low rate’ platinum credit cards and gold cards. They have the lowest annual fee out of the cards in this category, but lack some premium features like a high earn rate, lounge access and insurances.

Look beyond the annual fee to the extra perks like insurance and features like the earn rate and balance transfer offer.

Credit union rewards credit cards

Credit union rewards credit cards

Responsible rewards from community focused credit card providers

Credit Unions are known for their competitive credit cards but not the value of their rewards programs. As time goes, there is an expanding choice of credit union rewards cards, but the range is presently limited.

Finding a credit union credit card with features to match the cost is made a little easier by the comparatively low annual fee of credit union credit cards. Compare these cards based on their fees, earn rate, linked rewards program and extra perks.

At the time of writing, we currently do not compare any credit union credit cards with a rewards program.

You can find out more about credit union credit cards on this page.

International rewards credit cards

Pay nothing extra for overseas purchases and earn points

Rewards cards with no foreign transaction fees are a rare breed

International credit cards are cards that don’t charge fees for overseas purchases.

Out of the cards we compare, there are no rewards cards that waive the currency conversion fee.

There are credit cards that offer more points per dollar spent overseas, but you need to weigh the additional value offered by rewards against the extra cost of currency conversion.

What about a travel card?

Qantas Cash, a travel card, gives you one Qantas Point per dollar spent overseas and one point per two dollars spent in Australia. There are no account fees or reload fees. There are no fees for currency conversion if you spend in a currency loaded onto the card. The Global Wallet from Velocity is a similar product. Earn Velocity points on eligible purchases in Australia and abroad.

Qantas Cash and Global Wallet comparison

Cash-back rewards credit cards

Turn your points into dollars and pay off your card debt

Read this if you want to use your points to pay off your card.

Turn your points into cash and pay off your credit card balance. These cards include products like the Coles Rewards MasterCard, which gives you money off your grocery bill when flybuys points are used as flybuy dollars, through to the Commonwealth Bank Awards MasterCard. Commonwealth Bank Awards Points can be used to pay the balance of the card.

The points to cash ratio is different for each rewards program. The value of a ‘cash-back’ dollar is not the same as the value of a regular dollar. Cash-back rewards can not be used to cover the minimum monthly repayment, but some cash-back rewards can be used to cover the card’s annual fee.

Compare these cards based on their annual fee and your annual spend. If you get enough cash back to cover the card’s annual fee, it’s worth your while.

Retail rewards credit cards

Get rewarded for being loyal

Find out how to get more points when you shop at the same place

a retail rewards credit card could give you dollars off your next purchase. Credit cards like the Coles MasterCard or the David Jones American Express give bonus points when you shop at their respective stores. The earn rate is often boosted when you bundle multiple products from the merchant too. For example, Coles MasterCard cardholders earn extra flybuys points when they also hold an insurance policy offered through Coles.

Choose between classic redemption options like selecting a reward from the online store, or points are redeemed automatically. Everyday Rewards cardholders get a gift voucher sent out to them when they reach a certain points threshold, for instance.

Know where you do most of your shopping, and how much you spend every month / year to get an idea of the return value from the retail rewards credit card. As with any credit card, compare the annual fee. A card with a low annual fee means you have to spend less to ‘break even’ on the rewards return value.

Supermarket rewards credit cards

Get a credit card from a supermarket for discounts at the checkout

Earn more points when you shop at Coles or Woolworths

Supermarket rewards credit cards are available from the major supermarket chains – Coles and Woolworths. Much like retail rewards credit cards, cardholders are rewarded for their return business.

And it pretty much comes down to whether you shop at Coles or Woolworths.

The Everyday Rewards Card (issued by Woolworths) has the one up on Coles due to their affiliation with the Qantas Frequent Flyer Program. You can link the Everyday Rewards card to your Qantas account and earn frequent flyer points instead of Everyday Rewards. While Coles, linked to the flybuys loyalty program, has a greater number of redemption options.

Woolworths customers get a discount on petrol when they fill up at Woolworths branded service stations. You can also save more with an Everyday Rewards card.

Consider the annual fee of the card / program. Those looking at a rewards card need to make sure they spend enough on the card to get back the cost of the annual fee in rewards.

Both programs have their benefits so it’s worth looking in to what you’re planning to redeem points for, or, where you are looking to get discounts before making your decision on which card to apply for.

Read our review of the flybuys loyalty program here.

What are the benefits and drawbacks of a rewards credit card?

Pros

  • Earn points as you spend. If you regularly use your card for everyday purchases, a rewards credit card can be a great way to get something back for your everyday spending.
  • Redeem a variety of rewards. Rewards credit cards offer a wide range of rewards. So whether you’re interested in travel rewards or everyday items such as gift cards and gadgets, most rewards programs offer a variety of ways for cardholders to redeem their points.
  • Extra bonuses. As well as a rewards program, some of these credit cards offer bonuses by the way of extra features such as additional signup points, complimentary insurance and airline lounge access.

Cons

  • Terms and conditions. Like every credit card, you’ll need to read the T&Cs before applying. However, you’ll need to pay close attention to the small print associated with rewards cards so you know the features and limitations of both the card and rewards program.
  • Interest. Rewards cards often attract large interest. If you struggle to pay your balance back each month, any interest that you may have to pay could counteract the benefits of the rewards.
  • Annual fee. These cards also often come with a high annual fee. If there is a yearly fee, you’ll want to make sure that the rewards you earn per year will outweigh the annual fee and any other costs associated with the card.

As you can see, there are a variety of rewards credit cards available for Australian cardholders. As always, there is no such thing as the one best rewards credit card. Instead, the best option will depend entirely on your unique financial situation and how you can get the most value from the card’s features and rewards system.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know which rewards program or rewards credit card is for me?

As a financial comparison service, we can’t recommend any specific product to our users. Instead, we provide them with the information they need to make an informed comparison and decision. When comparing rewards credit cards, consider your spending habits to determine whether the rewards you’ll receive will outweigh the costs of the card.

How many points will I need for a particular reward or flight?

The amount of points you’ll need will depend on your provider, the product and the details of the flight. In terms of flights, most frequent flyer programs have a points calculator available on their website. If you enter your preferred route and ticket status, the calculator can determine how many points you’ll need to cover the flight.

In regards to other types of rewards, most programs have an online catalogue that’ll allow you to browse the rewards on offer and how many points you’ll need to redeem a certain product or service

Can I convert my points to points with another airline or provider?

Most rewards programs don’t allow members to directly convert their points for points with another system. However, some options, credit cards linked with rewards programs such as Qantas Frequently Flyer or Virgin Velocity, allow cardholders to earn and redeem points with partnered airlines and organisations. Read the terms and conditions or contact your rewards program directly to confirm where else you can earn and use your points.
