Whether it’s from friends or family, most people have at least one misconception about credit cards, which can unfortunately spread. Here are some of the more popular myths that we’ve heard:
-
Credit Card Ownership means Debt Ownership
While not so much a myth as a common attitude, many people who don’t own a credit card refuse to apply for one as they fear they’ll be too irresponsible. While ownership of so-called ‘free money’ does involve discipline not to impulse spend, in the long term, you may actually end up in less debt.
This is due to credit cards being a staple tool in building your credit score. By proving to credit bureaus you’ve responsibly used a credit card over a period of time, you can gain access to cheaper interest rates on mortgages and other loans. For instance, a standard fixed interest rate on a financial product may be 13%. If your credit score is perfect, banks see you as no risk and you may negotiate your loan down to 11%. However if your credit score is patchy or poor, they may only lend to you at 15%.
