Book Flights Online With Westpac Altitude Rewards Points

Posted March 29th, 2010 and last modified November 17th, 2011

Globetrotting Australians are in a fix: travel costs are rising after three years of cheap round-trip flights to the U.S. and Europe. According to the Sydney Morning Herald, a return ticket to the U.S. today will set you back at least $1,400, up from just $900 in 2008. Domestic and Asia-Pacific flights have also jacked up their prices.

The solution for those who haven’t shaken off the travel bug is a travel rewards card, and the Westpac Altitude Credit Card is a great example. With the Altitude card, you earn points on your everyday spending, which you can redeem for travel discounts and even free flights. The points add up almost without effort—it’s like a virtual travel piggy bank!

Two cards is better than one

The Westpac Altitude Credit Card is a companion card system, which means you get two credit cards with your account. One is an American Express card, which earns you two points for every dollar spent. The other is a Visa card, where each dollar is equivalent to one point. The idea here is that you use American Express wherever it’s recognized to maximize your point-earning power, but if a store doesn’t accept it, you can always use your Visa card and still get the points.

Both cards are linked to the same account, so you only have one statement to keep on file. With two cards working for you and only one bill to answer to, you’re really maximizing your benefits. You’ll be off to your next holiday before you know it!

Take your pick

Your Westpac Altitude Credit Card gives you access to a wide range of flights from all major domestic airlines, allowing you to comparison-shop for the best deals. You can take advantage of tickets on sale or stick to your favorite airlines, so your points can take you further. If you’re a Qantas Frequent Flyer or Rex Flyer Rewards member, you can also earn points on your account and get discounts on eligible flights. Just mention it on your application and Westpac will link your account to your credit card.

One advantage to this program is that your points can also be used for additional charges, such as airport tax and baggage fees. If you’ve ever had to cough up dollars for “surprise” fees while in transit, you’ll know how handy this can be!

Get a head start

With the Westpac Altitude Credit Card, the rewards start coming even before the card is in your hands. When you get approved, Westpac will award you 5,000 altitude points as a bonus, which will be added to your account one week after you make your first purchase with either the Visa or the MasterCard. The points don’t expire, so you can keep saving up for as long as you need to. And since there’s no cap on points, there’s no pressure to cash in at any point—although you do need a minimum of 3,000 points to be able to redeem rewards.

Make sure to book your flights online using your Westpac Altitude Credit Card to get full benefits. Online booking gives you access to substantial discounts, last-minute specials, and seasonal offers that can save you hundreds of dollars. Check the offers regularly as they are updated often!
