Can I Use My Airline Card For Another Airline?

Posted July 30th, 2010

Which airlines offer a frequent flyer rewards program?

There are several different kinds of airline credit cards. You can get one that is affiliated with a specific airline or with a group of airlines. In either case you can usually use these cards for any kind of transaction but you will get the most benefit when you use them to book flights on the airline that is affiliated with your particular credit card. These cards are really rewards cards where the rewards comes in the form of discounts or frequent flyer miles that can be used toward a certain airline. If you use the card to book a flight on another airline you will not get the discount nor ill you be earning miles toward your next flight.

You will have to evaluate each airline card based on how you travel to determine which one is the best for you. If you prefer a certain airline and try to fly with them whenever possible then it is probably in your best interest to get a card from that airline so that you can earn rewards and discounts with them. Likewise, if you live near a certain airlines’ major hub you will likely fly that airline often, which makes it in your best interest to earn those rewards. Business travellers who use a variety of airlines and travel and peak times might be best served with a card that offers a variety of airlines from which to choose or even just a standard credit card that allows them to redeem their rewards on any airline.

Like all rewards programs you should consider how valuable the rewards are to you before you apply for a new card. If you do not travel much then an airline card, regardless of which airline it is associated with, might not be the best choice. You should also be certain to consider all of the cost of owning the card. Some of the more prestigious cards come with a high annual fee. They might also require you to be part of the airlines frequent flyer program, which may have another fee that you will have to pay for membership.

Most importantly, if you tend to carry your balance over from month to month then you will not get much value from a rewards credit card. The amount you spend on interest will overtake the amount of value you get from any reward. If you will rotate your balance from month to month it is probably best for you to choose a low interest credit card and fore go a rewards program.
