ATM cardless cash comparison: which bank does it better?

Westpac cardholders’ wallets are about to get a lot lighter with the recent launch of the Get Cash technology app. Whether you’ve lost your wallet on a night out or left your card in another bag, cardholders will no longer be stranded without cash. You can now use your Westpac app on your smartphone to sign into Get Cash to receive a code to enter at the ATM. Use that code and you can withdraw money without a card.

Westpac isn’t the first cab off the rank though, with Commonwealth Bank launching its Cardless Cash app in 2014. As CommBank and Westpac are the only two of the ‘big four’ Australian banks to have jumped on the cardless cash bandwagon, we’ve compared the apps to determine just how convenient each cardless cash offer is.

CommBank was the first Australian bank to offer Aussie cardholders this new payment technology. Here are the features you can look forward to when using Cardless Cash:

How can I use it?

CommBank customers can access Cardless Cash in 3 simple steps:

  1. Open the CommBank app and select the ‘Cardless Cash’ option.
  2. Select whether you or someone else will be collecting the cash. (If you nominate someone else, you’ll need to enter their phone number.)
  3. To collect the cash, simply select the amount you’d like to withdraw and you’ll receive an in-app Cash Code and Cash PIN via SMS. You can then select the ‘Cardless Cash’ option at the ATM and follow the prompts to enter the two relevant codes. (The codes expire after 30 minutes.)

Where can I use it?

There are over 4,000 CommBank ATMs available throughout Australia and most of these support Cardless Cash. To find an ATM compatible with the app, cardholders can use their CommBank app ATM Finder to locate the nearest ATMs.

What are the drawbacks?

  • Daily maximum. Customers can only withdraw up to $500 per day for themselves or a close friend or relative, which limits your access to your funds. (This total only covers actual cash withdrawn — if you fail to use a code before it expires, that won’t count towards your daily total.)
  • Compatibility. The CommBank app is only available on Android operating systems 2.3+ and iOS operating systems 5.0+. If your phone is an older model, it might be time for an upgrade if you want to use the app.

How am I protected?

New payment technologies often inspire anxiety, but CommBank Cardless Cash payments are covered by CBA’s 100% Security Guarantee. The code will also only remain valid until you’ve made the withdrawal or within 30 minutes, whichever comes first. If you’re unable to access an ATM within that period, your code will no longer be valid and you’ll need to start the process again.

westpac-logoWestpac: Get Cash

Westpac is offering CommBank some competition with the launch of its Get Cash app in August 2015.

How can I use it?

Similar to Cardless Cash, the Get Cash requires cardholders to follow 3 simple steps to get their cash:

  1. If you haven’t already, open a Westpac Choice account and register for Online Banking.
  2. Swipe left to sign in to Get Cash in the Mobile Banking app and generate a unique six-digit cash code.
  3. Locate a Westpac ATM and withdraw your cash using the cash code provided. If you’re using your Get Cash to help out a friend or family member, you simply need to send the code to them which they can then enter into the ATM.

Where can I use it?

Westpac cardholders can access cardless cash at over 3,000 Westpac Group ATMs across Australia, and over 50,000 ATMs within the Global ATM Alliance.

What are the drawbacks?

  • Daily maximum. Westpac also pose a $500 daily withdrawal minimum. Similar to CommBank, this limits the cardholder’s ability to access their cash.
  • Compatibility limitations. If you don’t have a smartphone, you’re out of luck. To access Get Cash you must be registered to use Westpac Online Banking and download the Westpac Mobile Banking App for iPhone, Android or Windows Phone. The Android options are also limited: The Get Cash function is only compatible with Samsung Galaxy S4, S5, S5 mini, S6, S6 Edge, Galaxy Alpha, Note 3, Note 4 and Note Edge.

How am I protected?

For security protection, the cash code will be rendered invalid once the withdrawal has been completed or after three hours. Transactions made using a Westpac account are also protected by Westpac Protect and 24/7 Falcon Security.

The CommBank Cardless Cash app and Westpac Get Cash technology both offer a number of opportunities and limitations. Both of the apps are relatively convenient to use, with only three steps required to access your cash when you don’t have your card on hand. However, daily withdrawal restrictions and mobile phone compatibility limitations could be a potential drawback depending on what the user has access to. As usual, you’ll need to compare the options available against your own financial needs and wants to confirm which app fits you well.

With payment technologies rapidly veering away from the more traditional card-based methods, the cardless cash opportunities available are sure to expand. Cardholders will need to take some of these considerations on board when comparing their options to ensure that the payment technology on offer is the most useful choice for them.
