On Guard: Minding Your Credit Card Usage To Protect Yourself

Posted September 2nd, 2010 and last modified October 27th, 2011

Steps you can take to protect your identity when using your credit card

The most important thing you can do with your credit card is monitor it for fraud. It is far too easy for criminals to steal your personal information and ruin your credit file before you even realise what has happened. You can avoid that circumstance by playing close attention to your credit card statements and transactions at all times.

You probably use your credit card for just about everything. Credit cards have quickly become the preferred form of payments for millions of consumers all over the world. They are more convenient then carrying cash and are accepted nearly everywhere so it makes sense that they are taking over. However, while credit card use is mostly secure they still provide opportunity for identity theft which is one of the worst things that can happen in your financial life. You do not have to stop using credit cars in order to avoid identity theft. Instead, you can follow a few steps to protect yourself when you use your credit cards.

Steps To Identity Protection

Step One: Shop at secure sites and retail outlets. When you shop on line it is easy to check the web address to make sure the site is using a secure server. The address should list an https and not just http which indicates the use of a secure server. When you are shopping in retail outlets make sure that your credit card never leaves your site, as this gives criminal elements the chance to steal your information. If a card reader looks strange to you or like it has been tampered with do not use it as it could have a device attached to it that stores your personal information later for retrieval by an identity thief.

Step Two: Keep track of your transactions. You should always keep your credit card receipts and then compare them to your statement. This way you will know immediately if your credit card account has been breached. If you notice something wrong you should contact your card issuer. They work hard at identity protection too and should be more then happy to assist you. Once you have checked your receipts and statements shred them before you dispose of them. It sounds unpleasant, but there are identity thieves out there willing to rifle through your garbage in order to get your personal information. Never just throw a statement or receipt in the trash.

Step Three: Look into fraud protection services. Your credit card issuer probably has fraud protections in place already. However, if you want added protection you can usually purchase special services from them. While it may cost a little extra it will be worth it to protect you and your finances in the long term.

Consumer habits are not just studied by credit card companies. Fraudsters study them too. They know how you are spending and look for any opportunity they can find to steal your data and use to their advantage. It is up to you to be vigilant about protecting your information so that you never fall victim to identity theft. All you have to do is follow the steps above and stay alert and you will not have to worry about having your financial life ruined. In the event you are a victim of identity theft, there are ways to recover but it is a long and trying road. The best way to handle it is to avoid being a victim in the first place.
