Citibank Overview

Almost everyone has heard of Citibank. They are one of the largest worldwide providers of financial products and services with a growth that is nearly unmatched. Although they have not been in Australia that long they have made their mark with a line of products that has something for everyone.

Although relatively new to Australia, Citibank has a long a storied history dating back to 1812. It began as the City Bank of New York in 1812 and became the National City Bank of New York in 1865 when it joined the national banking system in the United States. About thirty years later it was labeled one of the largest banks in the United States and soon added a foreign department. Citi was the first major United States bank to add this service which has served them well over the years.

Although Citi is one of the most recognised names in worldwide banking it has seen its share of missteps and failed endeavors over the years. The first such failure came in the 1960′s when they purchased the Carte Blanche credit card from Hilton Hotels. Within three years they were forced to sell the faltering product. They tried again in 1968 to launch another credit card under the name, “The Everything Card” but it failed to based on errors in marketing and in the budget. At that point Citi joined forces with MasterCard and in 1977 came out with another line of cards called the “Choice Card.” Unfortunately, that card was not successful either.

Eventually Citibank found credit cards and services that met client needs and were profitable for the company. One of the innovations they are most noted for is the Automated Teller Machine or ATM. In the 1970′s they discovered that their customers wanted a way to access their accounts every day of the week without the hassle of dealing with lines and customer service representatives. From this need came the ATM, which is a staple all over the world in banking.

Citibank Today

Citibank is a subsidiary of Citigroup, a worldwide financial powerhouse. In the United States it is has the largest holdings of any financial provider. It has a worldwide client base of more then 200 million people and businesses spanning 100 nations. There are more then 1,400 offices just in the United States in popular cities like Washington D.C., Miami, New York City, and Chicago.

As a part of the community Citibank works hard to become ingrained in the culture and provide sponsorships for various philanthropic and profitable ventures. They are famous corporate sponsors of the New York Mets Baseball Stadium which is called Citi Field. They have strived to provide a similar level of community involvement here in Australia. Citi participates in programs that aim to aid in development of the Australian community and of the local residents. Some of the programs include the Workplace Giving Program, the Volunteer Program, and the Community Partnerships Program.
