Comparing Supermarket Credit Cards

Are you a dollar-conscious shopper willing to go where the most competitive supermarket rewards credit card will give you the most benefit? Read this comparison to decide whether Coles’ or Woolworths’ offering cuts it for you. But remember, conditions apply to both cards and rewards schemes.

How the reward system works

Coles credit card

As soon as you start shopping at Coles Group stores you will start earning flybuys points at the rate of 1 point for every dollar spent on eligible transactions (excludes balance transfers, cash advances, credit fees and charges, refunds, and business purchases). You will also earn extra at flybuys participants including Liquor Land, K-Mart and Bi-Low.

Woolworths credit card

  • Earn 3 points for each dollar spent on Woolworths Select products purchased at Woolworths/Safeway Supermarkets.
  • Earn 2 points for each dollar spent on non-Woolworths Select goods at Woolworths/Safeway Supermarkets, and for purchases you make at Caltex, Safeway Liquor, Dick Smith Powerhouse and participating Tandy and Dick Smith Electronics stores.
  • Earn 1 point for each dollar spent on every other purchase.

At 4 month intervals you’ll receive a shopping card (provided you’ve earned enough points) which basically acts as a gift card for Woolworths or partnering stores listed below. Points are redeemable for practically anything: electronics, groceries and petrol. The shopping card expires 3 months from the date it’s sent.

The minimum shopping card value is $20 (3,448 points) and it’s then offered in $5 increments (862 points). Leftover points at the end of a 4 month period will remain available for redemption in the next rewards period.

Where to spend to receive reward points

Extra Benefits

Coles credit card

If you are a flybuys member, you can earn 1 flybuys points for every $1 you spend on your Coles MasterCard at Coles groups stores. However, no flybuys points are allocated for purchases you make on this card at non-Coles group stores. These points can be used for products and purchases as well, not just flights. With every 2,000 points earned, you receive a $10 discount on your grocery shopping at Coles Supermarkets and Coles Express.

Cardholders can pay for fuel using the epump facility at Caltex Woolworths/Safeway co-branded fuel outlets, and get back on the road faster.
