Commonwealth Bank Awards Cards – Be Awarded With An American Express Credit Card

Posted November 14th, 2009 and last modified December 29th, 2011

The way Commonwealth Bank awards cards world is changing. It is now possible to have a Commonwealth Bank Visa card or MasterCard linked on the same account to a Commonwealth Bank American Express credit card .

Benefits of the linked account:

Whilst MasterCard and Visa are the most widely-accepted credit cards in the world, not everywhere will accept American Express. This means that if you want to be covered for all eventualities and yet still possess Amex privileges, you will need to carry a MasterCard or Visa card and an American Express card. This would normally mean you having two accounts, with all the separate paperwork for each.

Having just one account for two cards means that you only have one credit limit, one balance, one statement, one annual fee, and the same interest rates for both cards. Therefore it is going to be far simpler to manage your finances and keep an eye on your spending.

Your new MasterCard or Visa card will have the same number as your current card, but the expiry date will change. Your Commonwealth Bank American Express Card will have its own number. Your old MasterCard or Visa card PIN will continue to work on your new card. A different PIN to use with your Awards American Express card will be sent under separate cover.

Possessing a Visa or MasterCard and Amex credit cards will mean you can enjoy the added flexibility of keeping two cba awards cards in your wallet, and being able to earn points on either, depending on where exactly you make your purchases.

With American Express, you will benefit from being part of the prestigious American Express Network, therefore you will have access to a great range of exclusive global privileges, including American Express Selects and globaleshop. With Visa and MasterCard, you are accepted at over 29 million merchant locations worldwide.

* American Express Selects – This affords the customer a range of offers and discounts across travel, leisure, dining and shopping in Australia and around the world
* globaleshop – This allows you to shop at any online store in the US that will normally refuse an Australian credit card or refuse delivery to an Australian address

Awards:

Another feature of your linked Commonwealth Bank awards cards account is that you will enjoy more points per dollar spent when you use your American Express card rather than your MasterCard or Visa card. Where your Amex card is accepted, you will gain more points for your spend, and where it isn’t, will can use your Commonwealth Bank Visa or MasterCard instead, and still earn yourself one point per dollar.

Existing customers who request their new cba awards cards before 30th November will receive an additional point for every dollar spent on their Commonwealth Bank American Express card for the first two months.

Is travel insurance provided with the Amex card?

  2. 2

    Hi Peter,

Thanks for your question. The Commonwealth Bank Awards Credit Card does not come with complimentary travel insurance. This is an added benefit with the Commonwealth Bank Gold Awards Card and is included with both the American Express and MasterCard as both cards are linked to the one account. The main difference between these two offers is that the Commonwealth Bank Gold Awards Card is more expensive than the Commonwealth Bank Awards Card as the cap for points is higher and points are earnt at a slightly higher rate. The terms of the travel insurance benefit cover you and your family for trips up to 3 months in duration. Hope this has helped.

    Cheers
    Jeremy
