Learn how to apply for a cba student credit card, and the features and benefits of carrying such a card. The sooner you learn to handle money the better you can manage your finances as an adult.

A cba student credit card is, for many people, the first time they will enter the world of credit. Although the idea of credit and students can send some people (parents) into a state of panic, this is actually the best time to start with a credit card. Credit limits on student credit cards are lower than regular cards to help reign in any extravagant spending plans, and this check allows for a better credit rating to be built up right from the start. The worst way to begin your borrowing history is to have lenders send too much money your way that you cannot pay back. It is far better that lenders see you borrow small and sensible amounts and pay them back in full and on time. Although this may not seem like a big deal, it indicates that you are a responsible borrower who can handle their debts with maturity.

Delaying your credit card application until your studies are over may actually make it harder to make a successful application. Credit card providers know that student credit cards are often overseen by inquisitive or interfering parents, so feel there is an extra layer of security in place. Once that is removed and the borrower enters the big wide world, if they have not built up sufficient credit history they might find things difficult.

The cba student credit card application is made on the same form as for any other Commonwealth credit card, except that a box is ticked at the head of the form to indicate that a student version is the required credit card. This will then set lower financial criteria for acceptance. Unless you are some whizz-kid entrepreneur, you could not, at 18 years old, be expected to have been in full-time employment for five years and be earning a gross income of $50,000.

Having said that, there are still basic criteria for acceptance with a cba student credit card. You must:

  • Be 18 years old or over
  • Be a full-time tertiary student at university or TAF
  • Have a Streamline account with Student Options
  • Meet credit rating requirements
  • Be an Australian citizen, a permanent resident, or have a current Australian visitor’s visa
  • Undergo an identification check if new to Commonwealth Bank. This must be done by law, and carried out in-branch with your Student ID and other approved documents

The interest rate on the cba student credit card is on the high side – 20.24% – but with credit limits starting at $400 that does not allow for a great deal of interest to mount up. There is a 55-day interest-free period on the card, and no fee is applicable, but when your studies come to an end your card will be exchanged for a Low Annual Fee credit card, for which you will be charged $24.
