Top 10 Wikipedia Credit Card Resources

Posted October 5th, 2009 and last modified May 11th, 2011

Good credit card resources are not always easy to come by (except of course at Our humble credit card abode.) One source that continues to impress just about anyone on the search for more information on any topic is Wikipedia. This online resource is never ending and I’ve gone and found some of the very best credit card resources for you from Wikipedia.

Top ten credit card resources on Wikipedia:

1. Credit Card Theft: This handy guide shows you some interesting stats about credit card theft and where theft occurs most likely. There is also a great overview of credit card theft specific terms such as skimming and carding.

2. Debit Card: Not sure whether you need credit or debit? Fear no more. The Wikipedia Debit Card guide explains the difference in each and details the various debit cards available such as the:

  • Offline debit card
  • Online debit card
  • Prepaid debit card
  • Electronic purse card

This credit card resource guide is really detailed because it covers most of the common countries specifically so you can see how debit is being handled where you live.

3. Credit Card: No credit card resource guide on Wikipedia is complete without the mother ship – the credit card resource itself. A handy guide with tons of information on the basics of credit cards. What are they? What are its features, etc.

Plus there is a really good image description of how credit cards look and what the information on each one relates to. Great for newcomers to credit cards.

4. Credit Card Debt: With so much credit card debt around these days who would want to look at credit card resources without a really good debt guide. Granted, the statistics on the site are a little outdated and could perhaps be renewed to reflect late changes, but overall this guide is handy for giving a short overview of the topic for newbies.

5. Cash Advance: When I was new to the credit card industry I never knew what a cash advance was. Having done a search on Google for the term I somehow ended up on this short  credit card resource overview which helped me sort out the meaning of a cash advance in my mind.

Even so it is short and sweet, this resource needed to be included.

6. Balance Transfer: Don’t know what a balance transfer is? Check out this informative guide. It details the most important aspects of balance transfers and what to pay attention to if you are considering a balance transfer card.

7. Identity Theft: Identity theft is becoming increasingly frequent these days thanks to the Internet. Therefore you need to know of the risks and dangers to you if you currently own a credit card.

The first line of defence is knowledge and by being informed you can protect your own identity better. This credit card resource shows you how. Pay specific attention to the section: Techniques for obtaining personal information.’

8. List of Bank Identification Numbers: While this credit card guide isn’t exactly fodder for the average reader it certainly provides those in need with a handy resource list of banks and their numbers to identify if you are dealing with a reputable card owner as a merchant.

What many people don’t know is that the first 6 digits of a credit card number is also known as the Bank Identification Number (BIN). The BIN identifies the bank who issue any credit card and if you suspect fraud, this is where you can check if the numbers match the bank.

9. Credit Card Interest: Credit card interest continues to baffle many consumers because they can’t for the life of them work out how the system works. With this credit card resource you will gain a good foundation of knowledge about the calculation of interest rates by financial institutions.

10. Grace Period: Are you habitually late with payments and therefore evoke a penalty or fee from your card issuer? If so this credit card resource will show you why.

Learning what it means to miss the grace period cut off date and why goes a long way in saving those precious dollars.

Hopefully by now you’ve read all ten credit card resources and are a little more educated on the topic of credit cards in general. Now go and make the most of it by applying your new found knowledge to everyday life.
