Credit Card Best Value Offers

Posted March 10th, 2010 and last modified March 15th, 2010

If you are in the process of looking for a new credit card, best value should be your watch-words. To know what best value looks like in a credit card, you need to establish how you have used a credit card in the past, and how your future usage is likely to look. It is your own personal circumstances that will dictate what a best value credit card means for you.

St George Vertigo

One of Australia’s Best Value Credit Card Offers

The St. George Vertigo MasterCard has consistently been a great value credit card with a low interest and fantastic deals on credit card balance transfers.

  • $55 annual fee
  • 13.24% p.a. on purchases
  • 0.99% p.a. for 12 months on balance transfers
  • Cash Advance Rate of 21.49% p.a.
  • 55 days interest free
  • Minimum Income Requirement of $15,000 p.a.

The following situations are the most commonly encountered with credit card users, and the one that best describes you will give you the best idea of what type of credit card you need.

You rarely pay your bill in full

In this case, the best value credit card will be one that offers a low ongoing purchase interest rate. These can be grabbed right now with rates as low as 9.99% (Bankwest Breeze MasterCard), and rates then climb right through to around 20%. Failing to pay your bill in full each month obviously leaves a balance carrying over into the following month. You are then charged interest on that amount, and indeed you do not benefit from the interest-free days in the month you made those purchases.

The best way to mitigate the effects of the interest charges is by having a card with a low rate of interest.

You rarely use your card and nearly always pay your bill in full

If this is how you usually behave with your credit card, best value for you would be to find a card with a zero annual fee. The thinking here is that you do not want to be paying for something you hardly make use of. Although zero annual fee cards tend to have higher regular interest rates, this will not be a concern if you nearly always clear your bill each month. The individual who always manages to pay off their bill and doesn’t pay an annual fee will be able to use their plastic completely cost-free.

You use your card for nearly everything

If your credit card is used to pay for purchases, bills and everything else, then you should find that the best value credit card is one that has a generous rewards scheme attached to it – perhaps a cashback program. If you can find one that also has a low interest rate, then you won’t be hit too hard by charges if you don’t always pay your bill in full every month. The proviso here is that you do not pile spending onto your card just to earn rewards points. If this makes you unable to clear your balance on a regular basis, you will be charged more in interest than you ever gain from the dollar value of any points you earn.
