Almost everyone pays attention to credit card rewards when they first sign up for a card. It is what draws us in and we all tend to use those rewards at first. But after we have had a card for a long time we sometimes forget about other perks that are available.

Most cards, even low interest cards, carry some additional rewards for their customers. Not using them is a lot like throwing money away, so you should check and see if you have been missing out on some valuable credit card rewards.

Common credit card rewards:

  • Free Purchase Cover – Free purchase cover is basically insurance on your purchases. Depending on the terms and conditions of your card they can cover the personal items you have purchased from theft, loss, or vandalism. You may be eligible for free repairs, replacements, or financial compensation.
  • Extended Warranties – Some credit card rewards offer extended warranty protection for up to 12 months after you have purchased a product. This is good to know because many products offer an extended warranty that you pay for, you could be paying for something that you already have for free. These warranties are in addition to manufacturers warranties.
  • Free International Travel Insurance – Whenever you travel internationally you should check to see if your card has this credit card reward. Sometimes it is even offered on so-called non rewards cards. If you use your card to book the trip and you have to cancel for a covered reason you might be able to be reimbursed for any charges for the trip that you made with the card.

Credit card rewards are only valuable if you use them. You earn them by paying your bills on time and giving the credit card company your business so you should make sure that you take full advantage of whatever they offer. You might think that once the introductory perks are over that the only real value of using your credit card is for convenience, but that is simply not the case. Some of the credit card rewards listed above can be even more valuable then those introductory offers. Even more valuable is the fact that they are usually good indefinitely, so even your oldest credit card can still give you a little something back for being a good customer.
