Forget pulling your wallet out, Aussie card holders can now cut time at the check out with Apple Pay. The app allows you to make payments directly from your compatible iOS device including iPhones, iPads and Apple Watches. Similar to contactless credit cards, Apple Pay uses NFC (Near Field Communication) technology that’s built in your device, allowing you to simply tap it against the card reader to pay for your purchases without getting your card out.
Launched in the US in 2014, Apple Pay was first made available to Australians through American Express. Since then, ANZ has joined the Apple Pay ranks with its Visa, MasterCard and American Express products and the remaining big four banks are expected to join any time now.

How does Apple Pay work?
Apple Pay works with any iOS device that offers Apple Pay compatibility. On the iPhone side of things, that includes the iPhone 7, iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 6S, 6S Plus and SE. It also works with the Apple Watch and some iPads. If you have a compatible Apple device, you can then use this contactless payment option with any of the following cards:
- Eligible American Express–issued credit or charge cards
- ANZ-issued Visa credit and debit cards
- ANZ-issued American Express cards
- ANZ-issued MasterCard credit cards
Before you can start using the app, you’ll need to store your eligible card details in the Wallet app.
How to add your card details to the Wallet app and set up Apple Pay
- If you’re using an iPad, open up Settings and tap “Wallet & Apple Pay”. If you’re using your iPhone or Apple Watch, open the “Wallet & Apple Pay” app.
- Select “Add Credit or Debit Card” and follow the prompts to enter your card information.
- Tap “Next”. Your bank will then verify your information to determine whether or not your card is compatible with Apple Pay. You may be asked to provide more details to verify your card. When you have the required information, go back to “Settings”, then “Wallet & Apple Pay” and tap your card.
- Wait for verification from your bank, then tap “Next”. You can now start using Apple Pay at participating outlets.
When you reach a terminal that shows the contactless payment symbol, there’s no need to open the app or wake up your display. Instead, your phone will use the internal NFC antenna to process the payment.
Simply hold your phone up to the contactless reader with your finger on the Touch ID. If you don’t have your fingerprint password activated, you’ll need to enter your password. Apple Pay can be used at any contactless payment terminal, so you should have no trouble finding places that accept mobile payments.
Is Apple Pay safe to use?
Apple Pay includes a range of features that protect your data and device. For example, instead of using your actual credit and debit card numbers when you add your card, a unique Device Account Number is assigned, encrypted and safely stored in a dedicated chip in your Apple device known the Secure Element.
When you use Apple Pay to make a purchase, the Device Account Number and a transaction-specific dynamic security code are used to approve your payment. Unlike credit cards, every payment requires a Touch ID or a passcode, which reduces the chances of someone using your phone for payments if it’s stolen.
What if my device is lost or stolen?
If your iPhone or iPad is misplaced or stolen, you can use the “Find My iPhone” app to put your device in Lost Mode. This allows you to either suspend Apple Pay or to wipe your device clean. If you’ve synced your device with iCloud, you can log in to your iCloud account and select “Settings” to disable your phone from making payments with your credit or debit card.
Apple Pay may have only been introduced in Australia in late 2015, but it’s sure to become a popular contactless payment alternative over the next few years.
