Find the Best Rewards Credit Card For Your Airline
If you travel frequently, having a frequent flier rewards credit card is essential. Having a rewards card that’s partnered with your preferred airline is ideal.
Of course, if your airline doesn’t offer a rewards credit card, there are many cards that allow you to redeem rewards for several different airlines.
Rewards Card for Qantas Travelers
If you like to travel on Qantas, the Qantas American Express Card is a good choice. Perhaps the best thing about this card is that, unlike many other rewards card, there is no annual fee. You even have the option of adding additional cards to your account without paying the usual additional card fee. Because of the nature of rewards credit cards, you want to reduce the fees you have to receive the full benefit of your rewards.
- With the Qantas American Express Card, you earn 1 point for every $1 you spend. You don t need to do any tricky math to figure out how many reward points you earn for spending a certain amount of money. Spend $1,000 in purchases, earn 1000 points. It’s just that easy. There s no cap on the number of points you can earn.
- The interest rate is 20.40% p.a. and you have up to 55 interest free days on purchases. While the interest rate is on the high side of interest rates, it s comparable to that of other rewards credit cards. You can avoid paying high interest charges on your balance by paying your balance in full before the interest free days expire.
- The Qantas American Express Card is also available in gold and platinum versions with slightly higher earning potential (1.25 per $1 spent and 1.50 per $1 spent) and higher annual fees ($195 and $395). You’d need to spend more and redeem more flights to offset the annual fee.
Other Qantas Rewards Cards include
Rewards Card for Virgin Blue Travelers
For travelers whose preferred airline is Virgin Blue, a Velocity NAB Standard credit card is the way to go. The account allows you to have two credit cards instead of one – an American Express Velocity NAB credit card and a Velocity NAB Visa. Both cards have a single annual fee of $65, 44 interest free days, and a 19.99% p.a. interest rate on purchases.
With Velocity NAB Standard card, you earn 1.5 point per $2 spent on purchases. In this case, there is a bit of calculating involved with figuring up your points. Divide whatever you spend by two and multiply that by 1.5 to get your point value. So if you spent $100, you d multiply $50 by 1.5 to see you earned $75.
- There is no cap or expiration date on any points you earn.
- The Velocity NAB Standard card offers a 6-month introductory interest rate of 3.99% on balance transfers.
- There is a gold version for a $150 annual fee and allows you to earn 2 points for every $2 spent.
Rewards Card for Air New Zealand
The Diners Club Australia rewards credit card allows you to convert your points to Airpoints Dollars, the currency used by Air New Zealand s frequent flier program. One hundred Diners Club points equals 1 Airpoints Dollar.
You earn 1 Diners Club Reward points for every $1 you spend and you can double your points when you shop at certain Diners Club Bonus Partners.
- There is a one-time fee of $77 to join the Diners Club rewards program.
- The Diners Club card is a charge card with no credit limit. Your balance must be paid in full at the end of each billing period. You are given 44 interest free days.
- You can also redeem rewards your Diners Club points for Qantas flights.
Rewards Card for Other Airlines
If your preferred airline is not Qantas, Virgin Blue, or Air New Zealand, the American Express Blue Sky Credit Card is a great option. With this card, you can earn points and redeem them with the airline of your choice.
- The American Express Blue Sky Credit Card lets you earn 1 point for every $1 in purchases, taking the guesswork out of the number of points earn with your purchases.
- There is a preset point value for trips, so you know in advance the number of points (and $ purchases) you need to redeem your flight.
- Points never expire and there is no cap. There is a $95 annual fee, 55 interest free days, and 19.99% p.a. interest rate.
