A person who applies for a gold card must meet the minimum requirements for annual income and age. However, if you are eligible for a gold card, which one should you choose?
Choosing Gold Credit Cards
When choosing gold credit cards, you’ll want to pay special attention to the interest rate, or the typical APR for purchases. Does the card offer any extended gold cardholder benefits? What about higher credit limits, purchase protection, extended warranties, fraud protection, travel accident insurance, or any other benefits commonly associated with this type of card? These are all things you’ll want to look for when comparing cards, as you should only choose the card that offers the most benefits while at the same time offering the lowest possible rates.
You’ll want to see if the gold credit cards offer any kind of rewards programs. These are commonly referred to as cash back rewards. This is where you get money back for every qualifying purchase you make. It’s always nice to get money back from purchases just for using the card, after all.
In addition to rewards programs, what about balance transfers? Can you transfer your other card balances onto this one and, if so, how much will you be charged?
Fees
When choosing gold credit cards, you also want to be conscious of any fees you may be assessed. Is there an annual fee? What about hidden fees? Are there any of those? Sometimes, you won’t get charged fees up front and they only come later after a trial period. Make sure you read the fine print so that you can make sure you’re not going to get hit with any fees you’re not aware of.
Research
There are many gold cards available, so research them all. If you make the age and income requirements, start asking questions about fees, balances and any other benefits you may have in mind. Just remember that when you do get your gold card that you balance your money correctly so that you can pay off your balances every month.
Owning a gold credit card is a privilege set aside only for a select few. But you must do your research and compare all the cards available to you in order to find the right one for your needs.

I have had an ANZ gold/platinum visa card for many years.I have just purchased O/s travel tickets for a Sri Lanka holiday for the wife and I.Could you please send me details of how your complimentary travel insurance works eg. When & how does it become effective? What are your conditions? What does it cover etc? Thank you. Ramon.
Hi Ramon. Here’s a quick video that covers some general credit card travel insurance basics.
In a nutshell, the terms and conditions (which I’ve sent to your email) says, ‘Your cover is automatic as long as at least half of your prepaid Travel expenses are paid for with your ANZ Gold Card. Where an ANZ Gold Card is not an accepted means of payment, you will be covered if you pay using funds from any of your other ANZ accounts. Prepaid Travel expenses include the cost of transport, accommodation and other Travel itinerary items, including any taxes paid before departure. Your Family Travelling with you will also be automatically covered.’ See the policy document for further information on the cover provided. Jacob.
I’m moving OS and would like to get a gold card with travel insurance that covers me for travel that does not originate or terminate in Australia. The cards I’ve looked at seem to imply that flights need to start or end in Australia. Are there any cards that have travel insurance for flights between non-Australian countries
Hi Kym. Thanks for your question. This is not offered. The international travel insurance policies offered with credit cards requires that the journey begin and end in Australia. You may have to take out a policy that is not an included credit card benefit. Jacob.
Can retirees get a gold credit card?
We have already booked and paid for train and accommodation in Darwin, can we still get a gold credit card?
Hi Anne. Thanks for your question. If you’re referring to the complimentary international travel insurance benefit offered with gold and platinum credit cards, you must pay for the international tickets or prepaid travel expenses using the card. You can still apply for a gold credit card, provided you meet the minimum eligibility requirements, but if you have already book your travel and accommodation within Australia, you won’t be eligible for the insurance benefit – it also applies for international trips only too. Jacob.
