Information verified correct on February 13th, 2016
Earn More Frequent Flyer Points From shopping to travelling to renting a car, you can earn frequent flyer points from Qantas.

Earning more Qantas Frequent Flyer points

The national airline of Australia, Qantas, has a Frequent Flyer program that allows members to earn Qantas Frequent Flyer points that can be redeemed for free flights. When you want to travel and really can’t afford the cost, this program can really help you out. More and more people are using points to help them get on the holiday they want and need.

There are different ways that you can earn more Qantas Frequent Flyer points and they are listed below.

  1. Credit cards that are linked to the programThis is an easy way to earn more points in this program. When you have a credit card that is linked up to the Frequent Flyer program you will be able to earn Qantas Frequent Flyer points every time you make a purchase with the card. In most cases every dollar you spend on the credit card will give you between one and 1.5 Frequent Flyer points. How many points you will earn depends on which card company you are with.
  2. Earn points while you travelEvery time you travel with either Qantas, Qantas airline partners or OneWorld alliance you will earn more points. That amount of points that you can receive will depend on your membership status, the class of the cabin and how far you travel. There are various airlines that have partnered up with Qantas both internationally and domestically that will give you Qantas membership points. OneWorld alliance has various airlines including Royal Jordanian Airlines, Qantas, Malev Hungarian Airlines, Mexicana Airlines, LAN Airlines, Japan Airlines, Iberia Airlines, Finnair, Cathay Pacific, British Airways and American Airlines.
  3. Shop with business partnersThere are several business partners that have linked up with Qantas including real estate offices, mobile phone companies, travel agencies, florists and mortgage companies. When you purchase a service or product from one of them you will earn Qantas Frequent Flyer points.
  4. Car rental companiesWhen you use Thrifty, Hertz, Budget or Avis you will earn points that can later be redeemed. For every dollar you spend you will earn three rewards points in Australia and 700 points at these rental services abroad.
  5. Dining outThere are more than 200 different bars and restaurants in Australia that are linked to the program. For every dollar you spend at these selected establishments you have the potential to earn three points.
  6. Appointed hotelsThere are hotels that have been appointed by Qantas as partner hotels and you may earn three points every time you spend a dollar at hotels located in Australia. Staying at partner hotels internationally can earn you as much as 1000 points for your stay.
  7. Selected retail partnersShop at partner retail outlets such as Woolworths, Big W. or Safeway Supermarkets, to name a few, to earn points. How much you purchase at these outlets will determine how many points you will receive. If you are already a member of the Everyday Rewards program and both programs are linked up you will earn Frequent Flyer rewards points.

Program outline

When you first sign up to become a member of the Qantas Frequent Flyer Program you will be a Bronze member. As you work up the levels you will get a higher status and will get better rewards. You can raise your status only by flying with Qantas, Oneworld alliance or selected partner airlines.

Silver membership

You will achieve this status once you earn 350 points for status credit and retain 300.

Gold membership

You can achieve this status by earning 700 points for status credit and retain 600.

Platinum membership

This is achieved once you have earned 1400 points for status credit and retain 1200.

How to redeem points

You can redeem your Qantas Frequent Flyer points by booking flights with partner airlines with Qantas, OneWorld airlines and Qantas. There are no expiry dates on these points and they remain valid if you travel within an 12 month time period at least one time.

There are many ways to earn more Qantas Frequent Flyer points and make them pay off in a big way. If you need some help paying for your next holiday, become a member of the Qantas Frequent Flyer program to make it happen.

Bonus Tips for earning points

Read on below to learn more tips regarding earning frequent flyer points.

  • Sign up bonuses – these are usually offered by card providers to entice new customers, and can offer thousands of free rewards points simply for being approved. Some cards like the American Express Platinum Card offer as many as 80000 bonus points, while many will offer a lower number between 10,000 – 20,000 bonus points. It’s very important to ensure that even if a card offers bonus points you aren’t going to pay for this through high annual fees or rewards membership fees.
  • Make large purchases using your credit card – This depends on the size of your credit limit, but if you’re going to purchase a big ticket item such as a television, car or holiday with cash or your savings, it may be a good idea to use your frequent flyer card. This way, you can get the points rewards, and then pay off the balance straight away. Be careful though, some purchases such as air fares charge large surcharges when using a credit card, so ensure you don’t need to pay this or the points may be worth a whole lot less.
  • Add your partner to your account as a second cardholder – Additional cardholders will also earn points for you on any eligible purchases, so it can sometimes be a good idea to have your partner added to your account to earn more frequent flyer points for your spending. A couple words of caution first – you’re responsible for any spending an additional cardholder makes on your account, and also be aware that some cards will charge a fee for each cardholder which is added onto your account.
  • Take advantage of status levels – Each frequent flyer program will usually have membership tiers. Qantas and Virgin refer to these as ‘status’ tiers in their respective programs, and each level has a number of perks which come with it, among them increased frequent flyer earn rates. Both the Qantas Frequent Flyer and Virgin Velocity platinum status tiers offer travellers a 100% points bonus when flying on eligible flights.
  • Make use of members specials – Most frequent flyer programs, Qantas and Virgin Velocity included, have retail partners which offer bonus points for shopping with them. These can even include services such as rental cars, telephone bills and more, so have a look at your frequent flyer program’s member specials. Ensure you’re not going to pay a premium for the service or item, otherwise this might outweigh the bonus points you receive
