Small Business Credit Cards: How To Manage Your Business Credit Card

Posted January 28th, 2010 and last modified September 22nd, 2011

Any wise business owner uses small business credit cards. The benefits of using small business credit cards over your personal credit cards are far reaching. By separating the accounts you are able to ensure that your personal finance and your business spending are not intertwined. It can also help you manage the bookkeeping of your business by providing a monthly itemized list of expenditures.

Most credit card companies will even send you a yearly summary of your expenses. However, once you have your small business credit card you should take great care in managing that account and using all of the rewards that come with it.

Managing small business credit cards:

  • Apply for a small business credit card at your current bank. Since you probably already have a relationship with this institution it will help with the process for what will likely be a high credit limit.
  • Try to only have one credit card instead of multiple cards. Each card you apply for, even when it is approved, pings your credit report negatively. So keeping just one card will avoid these negative points.
  • Use the on line services offered by the credit card company. This will save you both time and money in the long term by avoiding trips to the bank teller and phone transactions.
  • If it is at all avoidable do not use the cash advance option on your small business credit card. Cash advances have higher fees then regular purchases. If you need funds right away you should use your business account debit instead.
  • Pay your bill on time. Late fees can be extremely costly. Your company might increase your interest rates due to late payments, both of these things can quickly overcome the value you are getting from your credit card.
  • Take full advantage of the grace period by using it for all of your spending needs. Doing this will improve your cash flow because the grace period is usually longer then the time it would take for a check to clear through the bank. You will also avoid added interest which equals a lot of money by paying your full bill off each month.

A business owner should take as much care in managing their small business credit card as they do with the business itself. Be responsible with spending and payments and you will have a long and rewarding relationship with your credit card company.
