How To Survive Christmas With Your Card

Posted December 28th, 2009

Christmas is a time of year that can be very stressful in many ways and learning how to survive Christmas can get you prepared for a fresh start to a new year.

It can take a toll on us financially, emotionally and physically, and it’s a good idea to put a plan together – a survival plan for Christmas.

If you want to survive Christmas you’re going to have to take control of the festive season and not get caught up in all of its demands. You can still have a fun time with your family without burning out.

Survive Christmas by using moderation:

The problem at Christmas is we overspend, we overeat, and we over-drink. It is common for consumers to charge their credit card to the limit at Christmas with a determination to pay it back after the holiday season. The problem with that is you will probably not be able to afford it after Christmas if you are not able to afford it now. There is no doubt that Christmas is an expensive time of the year and that a credit card is handy to fall back on. You must think, however, about the future and what kind of financial demands you are placing on yourself by indulging in a holiday shopping spree. One thing you can do is set a budget based on how much you feel you will be able to spend and then reduce your card down to that limit. This will definitely help you survive Christmas.

A plastic credit card does not carry with it the reality that real money does, so it is important to visualize how much cash you are actually paying when you make your purchases. As you do this, remember that smaller less expensive gifts can be more valuable than those that cost more. You can also have a Kris Kringle setup where each family member only purchases for one other member.

It is definitely hard to survive Christmas if you are a dieter and have to monitor your calorie intake. One suggestion for handling this is to save up the binging for one occasion where quality foods are being served, and then get back to the dieting. At office parties you simply need to skip any fried foods and look for the healthy ones. If you go to a party eat beforehand so you do not arrive hungry.

To survive Christmas you will have to watch what you drink as well. Stay away from mixers like soda and fruit drinks and choose something plain like soda water instead.

Stay away from binge drinking as Christmas and New Year’s approach because if you want to survive Christmas you don’t want to do it in a hospital. While it is not expected that you avoid drinking altogether, try to keep it moderated so that you can make the best of the holiday season without a constant hangover. Always keep up with your training routine, no matter what. There will be a lot of time at Christmas where you have free time so use it to do more exercise instead of giving up on your routine altogether.

You can survive Christmas by following this simple advice, and have more money available in January for a change. Wouldn’t that be nice?
