How to use a Chip Credit Card
Posted August 31st, 2010 and last modified October 19th, 2011
Using a credit card with a built-in chip might give you more protection from credit card frauds than one with a magnetic stripe only.
Guide to using Chip Credit Cards
New chip credit cards are here, and now you can enjoy even greater credit card security. Chip credit cards have an embedded microchip, which is more secure than a credit card which only has a magnetic strip on the back – making it more difficult for someone to fraudulently copy your credit card details.
Both Coles and Woolworths are introducing new microchip technology to make your credit / debit card transactions even more secure.
If your credit or debit card contains an embedded microchip, you can begin to use chip credit card readers when paying with your credit card. If your credit card doesn’t have a chip you can continue to swipe your card as usual
Using your chip card is quick, convenient and safe. Simply follow these 4 steps:
- Once all your items have been scanned at the checkout, insert your chip-embedded credit/debit card into the pin pad at the base of the card reader. Leave the card in the pin pad
- When prompted, select your account
- When prompted, choose between entering your PIN or signing a printed receipt – just as you’ve done in the past
- Don’t forget your card. Once the transaction is complete, remove your card from the pin pad and you’re ready to go.
Chip credit cards add another level of security to your credit card. If you have an old credit card without a chip, you should consider applying for a new credit card that has one / or contact your issuer to see if you can have a new card issued to you with a chip
