There are some basic eligibility requirements if you want to apply for a HSBC Credit Card. For example, you must have a good credit history and you have to be over the age of 18. Unlike other credit card providing financial institutions, HSBC do offer credit cards to non-temporary residents, however, you may need to speak to a HSBC representative directly if you wish to apply as a non-resident.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I get my PIN and how do I change it?

When you apply for a HSBC Credit Card, your PIN will be issued with the card. Your PIN will arrive in a separate envelope for safety reasons. Once you activate your credit card, you can use the PIN to make purchases and withdraw cash.

If you want to change your PIN for any reason, you can do this by visiting a HSBC branch. It only takes a minute or two to complete the process of setting up a new PIN.

How do I get interest-free credit with HSBC?

HSBC have agreements with a number of merchants that may allow you to get extended interest-free finance. Get the items you want and pay back the balance over a period of six, nine or 12 months without paying any interest. You need to set up an interest-free finance agreement with the merchant if you want to make use of this feature.

Interest-free finance is different to the interest-free days feature on HSBC credit cards.

What’s the minimum repayment on my HSBC Credit Card?

If you’re carrying a balance on your HSBC Credit Card, there’s a minimum amount you need to pay back each month to stop your account from going into default. The minimum monthly repayment is a percentage of your total outstanding balance.

The minimum repayment is listed on our HSBC Credit Card review and application pages.

How do I apply for a HSBC balance transfer?

If you want to take advantage of the balance transfer promotion available with HSBC credit cards, generally, you need to be a new customer applying for the credit card.

You elect to transfer a balance from a non-HSBC credit card, store card or charge card within the online application. Enter the name of your financial institution, the amount you want to transfer and details of the account. If you’re approved for the credit card, you’re generally approved to transfer the balance to the account too.

A balance transfer is automatic. Once you activate the credit card, the balance will be automatically transferred by HSBC.

How much can I transfer to my HSBC Credit Card?

The maximum amount you can transfer to a HSBC Credit Card is based on your credit limit. HSBC allow you to use up to your available credit limit towards a balance transfer. For example, if you’re approved for a credit card with a limit of $10,000 you can transfer up to $10,000 from multiple other credit cards, store cards or charge cards.

How do I earn Qantas Points with my HSBC Credit Card?

If you want to get rewarded with Qantas Points when you spend on your HSBC Credit Card. Pick a product that’s linked to the Qantas frequent flyer program.

Points are awarded for eligible purchases only. Think of an eligible purchase as your everyday type of transaction, like paying for groceries or paying for petrol.

Cash transactions are ineligible to earn Qantas Points. A cash transaction is a transaction like a cash advance, paying a government or credit card fee or charge or using your credit card to pay for business expenses. Have a look at the terms and conditions for a specific list of transactions that are ineligible to earn Qantas Points.

Do BPAY payments earn rewards points?

BPAY payments do not earn rewards points. Eligible purchases exclude interest free promotions, balance transfers, business expenses, cash advances, fees or charges, any disputed transactions, BPAY payments and any government fee or charge.

Is HSBC a bad credit card company?

      • Staff
        Jonathan | June 1, 2015

Hi user, thanks for your inquiry!

HSBC does not provide products specifically aimed towards bad credit. HSBC requires that you have a good credit rating, be 18 years or older, be a permanent Australian resident and have a minimum income requirement (depending on the credit card).

        I hope this helps.

        Cheers,

        Jonathan

Having applied for a HSBC Platinum Qantas Credit Card and having my application knocked back on the grounds that I do not have enough income, I find it hard to fathom why as I have a good credit record, own my own house, have a pension of $X per year, and over $X in shares and bank accounts with no debt at all. I have tried to contact the credit department at HSBC and have been brushed off every time with no success. I have to wonder what I have to do to get an answer? I am a pensioner and wonder whether it is my age that is the reason why I have no luck with this card (at the moment I do have a platinum card with another bank) and that has no debt on it, maybe they only want people with a large debt to make more money.

      Hi,
I applied for a 0% 6 months balance transfer about 3 weeks ago. I then received my platinum credit card in the mail and I have activated it. I keep ringing to see when the balance transfer is going to go through. I was told to wait the 7-10 days waiting period. I rang again and was told the transfer is being processed. Now today I rang and I was told they could not find where I had applied. I am really confused about this as I received the credit care for $15,000.00 credit (which I really did not need)and now I am being told no balance transfer. In the meantime, I have had to pay the other credit card off because of the high interest. Gosh, I am so disappointed with HSBC and all the running around I have been given to find that no balance transfer coming.

        Hi Martha,

        Thanks for your question.

If you applied for the balance transfer at the time of application, and you were bringing over a balance from non-HSBC card accounts, then your best option may be to contact HSBC and attempt to have the balance transfer approved. You might also see if they are able to offer you a way to organise a balance transfer of the card yourself.

Another option you have is submitting a complaint directly to HSBC or the financial ombudsmen.

        I hope this has helped.

        Thanks,

        Elizabeth
