What are the terms and conditions of the policy? 

Each of these providers and their activated policies cover your spouse and dependent children travelling with you, so long as they meet the standard eligibility requirements.

Under Allianz, dependent child/children are defined as:

a) all unmarried children up to and including the age of 18, who the cardholder has sole custody of and who live with the cardholder

b) all unmarried children up to and including the age of 18 who the cardholder has shared custody of;

c) all unmarried children from the age of 19, to and including the age of 21, who are full-time students attending an accredited institution of higher learning in Australia and who the cardholder has/ had sole or shared custody of, and who are dependent upon the cardholder for their maintenance and financial support; or

d) all unmarried persons who are physically or mentally incapable of self-support who the cardholder has study of and who live with the cardholder

Dependent children under the age of two years from the date the journey begins are eligible for this insurance policy once the primary cardholder has met the eligibility requirements.

Commonwealth Bank cover

How do I activate my policy? 

  • Commonwealth Bank cardholders aren’t required to meet an eligible spend to activate the cover. All Gold, Platinum and Diamond cardholders automatically receive cover. Cardholders are covered by a base level of cover and can update it to take advantage of the full policy via Netbank or the CBA customer service team. See our full guide of the Commonwealth Bank complimentary travel insurance policy for more details.

How long am I covered for? 

  • Gold MasterCard (3 months)
  • Platinum MasterCard (6 months)
  • Diamond MasterCard (12 months)

Bankwest cover

Unlike CBA, Bankwest cardholders are required to meet a minimum spend to activate their complimentary insurance policy. So long as they use their credit card to purchase their spouse and dependent children’s airline tickets, they’ll be covered under the policy.

How can I activate my policy? 

  1. Purchase a return overseas travel ticket before leaving Australia
  2. Each eligible member must spend at least A$500 on their prepaid travel costs before leaving Australia, which can be the cost of their return overseas travel ticket, and/or airport/ departure taxes; and/or their prepaid overseas accommodation/ travel; and/or any other of their prepaid overseas itinerary items.
  3. Pay these costs by one (or a combination) of the following methods:
  • Charging the required spend to the eligible credit card account; and/or
  • Redeeming their Bankwest More Rewards points (excluding any points redeemed for Frequent Flyer programs); and/or
  • By paying with redeemable travel agency flight vouchers that were obtained by converting your Bankwest More Rewards points

How long am I covered with Bankwest?

  • Gold MasterCard (3 months)
  • Platinum MasterCard (6 months)
  • World MasterCard (12 months)

HSBC cover

How can I activate my policy? 

  • The HSBC credit card complimentary International Travel Insurance cover is activated if, prior to leaving Australia, at least 90% of the total cost of your overseas return travel ticket has been charged to the accountholder’s card account. This condition applies to the primary cardholder, spouse and/or dependents.

How long am I covered for? 

  • The HSBC Premier World MasterCard, HSBC Premier Debit Card, HSBC Platinum Credit Card, HSBC Platinum Qantas Credit Card are all covered for up to 4 consecutive months.

QBE

Banks covered by QBE: ANZ, Westpac, St.George, Bank of Melbourne, BankSA

What are the terms and conditions of the policy? 

Primary cardholders who are eligible for complimentary travel insurance can also cover their spouse and/or dependent child/children two years of age and older if the following conditions are met:

1. The spouse and/or dependent child/children travels with the cardholder for the entire journey; and

2. Each spouse and dependent child spends at least $A500 on their prepaid travel costs before leaving Australia and charge this amount to the return overseas travel ticket; and/ or airport/ departure taxes; and/ or their prepaid overseas accommodation/ travel; and/ or their other prepaid overseas itinerary items) to the current Westpac cardholder’s eligible credit card

3. The spouse and/or dependent child/children have a return overseas travel ticket before leaving Australia; and

4. The spouse and/or dependent child/children is not over 80 years of age when they first become eligible for this by meeting conditions 1 to 3 as stated above

Dependent children under the age of two years as at the date of the journey commencing become eligible for this Overseas travel insurance, once the cardholder becomes eligible for this policy. The dependent child must be travelling with the cardholder for the entire journey.

Westpac Group cover

How do I activate my policy? 

Each Westpac cardholders and family member must meet the following criteria to be covered:

  1. Be a permanent resident in Australia or hold a current and valid 457 Visa and reside in Australia; and
  2. Spend the minimum requirement of AUD$500 prepaid travel costs e.g. overseas travel ticket, airport/ departure taxes, prepaid overseas accommodation/ travel to your eligible credit card
  3. Have a return overseas travel ticket before leaving Australia; and
  4. Cardholders must aged 80 years or less, otherwise you may need to contact your provider to request cover

How long am I covered for? 

How long you’re covered for will vary from card to card. For Westpac cards (including St.George, Bank of Melbourne and BankSA), you can expect the following covers:

  • Amplify Signature (6 months cover)
  • Vertigo Platinum (6 months cover)
  • Amplify Platinum (3 months cover)

ANZ

How do I activate my policy? 

ANZ cardholders must meet the following eligibility requirements before they and their family members are covered by the complimentary insurance:

  1. Have permanent residency in Australia or hold a current and valid 457 Visa and reside in Australia; and
  2. Spend the minimum requirement of AUD$250 prepaid travel costs e.g. overseas travel ticket, airport/ departure taxes, prepaid overseas accommodation/ travel to your eligible credit card
  3. Have a return overseas travel ticket before leaving Australia; and
  4. Must be 80 years or less of age when they first become eligible for this cover. If you’re older than 80 years old, you’ll need to contact your provider to request additional cover.

How long am I covered for? 

  • ANZ Frequent Flyer Platinum, ANZ Rewards Platinum, ANZ Low Rate Platinum, ANZ Platinum, ANZ Frequent Flyer Black, ANZ Rewards Black can claim up to 6 months worth of complimentary travel insurance.

Zurich

Banks covered by Zurich: Citibank, Virgin Money, Suncorp Bank, Diners Club, Bank of Queensland (BOQ).

What are the terms and conditions of the policy? 

Primary cardholders who are eligible may also have their spouse and/ or dependent children covered under the complimentary travel insurance policy.

Zurich defines dependent child as an “unmarried child of a cardholder, up to and including the age of 21 who is primarily dependant on the cardholder for their maintenance and support and who travels with the cardholder for the entire journey or trip.”

Citibank

How do I activate the policy? 

  • Before leaving Australia, you’ll need to charge the cost of your overseas travel ticket to your card. You can also qualify if your ticket was purchased under the Citibank Travel Program or via the airline frequent flyer program, provided that a minimum of 15,000 points were transferred to the program from points earned on a Citibank card or via Citi Rewards within 12 months of obtaining the overseas ticket.
  • Your spouse and children will be covered so long as they meet the standard eligibility requirements and are travelling with the primary cardholder for the entire journey.

How long am I covered for? 

Prestige Card, Signature Card and Platinum cardholders are covered for up to 6 months and Citibusiness Gold Card are covered for up to 3 months.

Virgin Money

 How do I activate my policy? 

  • Only Virgin High Flyer cardholders can take advantage of the complimentary insurance.  If a family is travelling together only one person can claim the benefits payable to the cardholder.
  • Before leaving Australia, you’ll need to charge the cost of you and your family’s overseas travel ticket to your card. Your family will need to be travelling with you for the entirety of the journey to claim the cover.

How long am I covered for? 

Virgin High Flyer credit card customers are covered for up to 6 consecutive months.

Suncorp Bank

How do I activate my policy? 

  • Only Suncorp Platinum, Gold and Plus cardholders and their spouse or children can take advantage of the complimentary insurance policy.
  • Cardholders must reside in Australia and hold either an Australian medicare card or current and valid subclass 457 Visa.
  • You’ll activate the cover so long as the cost of you and your family’s travel tickets were charged to your card, you redeemed it with Suncorp Bank Rewards points or under the Take Flight Program.
  • Accompanying family members must be travelling with you for the entire journey to claim the insurance.

How long am I covered for? 

Suncorp cardholders can claim complimentary insurance for trips of up to:

  • 31 days or less for Platinum cardholders with a one-way overseas travel ticket
  • 6 consecutive months or less for Platinum card cardholders with return overseas travel tickets.

Diners Club

How do I activate my policy? 

So long as you and your spouse and/or children’s overseas travel costs have been covered by the credit card, you’ll be eligible for complimentary insurance. Your family must be travelling with you for the entirety of the trip to receive cover.

How long am I covered for? 

  • Diners Club Personal Card, Diners Club Business Card, Frequent Flyer Diners Club Card, ANZ Rewards Diners Club Card, ANZ Frequent Flyer Diners Club Card and Citibank Diners Club Card are covered for 3 months.

Bank of Queensland

How do I activate my policy? 

So long as you and your family meet the eligibility requirements and meet the following terms and conditions, you’ll all be covered by the complimentary insurance:

  • The cost of the overseas travel ticket was charged to your card or
  • You redeemed Q Rewards® points in exchange for the overseas travel ticket, provided that the redemption occurs, where any relevant program exists or
  • You obtained the overseas travel ticket under the Take Flight® Program.

How long am I covered for? 

  • If you have a BOQ Platinum credit card you’ll receive 6 months of cover. BOQ Gold cardholders will receive 3 months of cover.

The most frequently asked questions from our users when activating complimentary insurance

If I travel twice in a 12 month period is my second trip covered?

Yes. Providing you return to Australia you will be eligible to receive the complimentary insurance for your second trip, assuming you meet the eligibility requirements for cover again.

Do I need to pay a minimum amount of my expenses on my card to be covered?

Most banks require an amount of money e.g. AUD$500 or a percentage of the flight cost e.g. 90% of the return flight to be covered. This applies to each eligible member of the complimentary travel insurance policy.
