Use your Qantas Frequent Flyer Points credit card to their full advantage
Posted September 9th, 2009 and last modified October 11th, 2011
Make the most out of your Qantas Frequent Flyer Credit Card by making it your main credit card and using it to pay for regular expenses.
Qantas has several options for credit cards to earn frequent flyer points, all with different benefits and privileges. You can earn points when you fly, and by using your Direct Earn credit card, shopping with over 400 of Qantas’ partners, such as Woolworths Supermarkets, restaurants, hotel stays, car rentals and services. Even using your mobile, broadband, entertainment, finance, specific businesses and real estate, can earn you points.
Direct Earn Credit Cards:
Direct Earn Cards allow you to earn points on everyday purchases, even letting you earn double points – once from the purchase the other from the partner. Here are some Direct Earn cards:
- Qantas American Express – Discovery, Premium, Ultimate
- ANZ Frequent Flyer – Visa, Platinum.
- BankSA Amplify Qantas – Visa
- Card Services, Gold MC
- Citibank Platinum w/Qantas Rewards
- Commonwealth Awards Card with Qantas FF Direct.
- Diners Club FF Club Card
- NAB Qantas Card

Of course, you can earn major points on flights on Qantas and their other partner airlines, as well and each time you earn a specific amount of points, you move up from Bronze Frequent Flyer, to Silver, to Gold and up to Platinum.
The points only continue to accumulate at each level, determined by status credits which are separate from the Qantas Frequent Flyer points because they are determined by how often and how far you fly on Qantas and their partner airlines. The more you earn, the higher your membership level climbs, and using the Qantas Frequent Flyer points calculator helps you see how many status credits you get for each flight you take.
The more your membership climbs, the better the benefits, such as automatic check-in for hotels and airlines, and many other benefits.
Extra Benefits:
When moving through the points system of Silver, Gold or Platinum, the extra benefits you receive include getting extra points the more you fly, priority check-in and preferred seating, extra baggage allowance on Qantas flights; admission to the Qantas Club and oneworld lounges.
A great reward system for points can also be purchases, discounts, flight upgrades and classic awards. Classic awards allow you to take a one way or round trip flight using Qantas Partner Classic Award seats – although these are ‘special’ seats and sometimes limited, booking in advance will sometimes eliminate this.
Other rewards for your FF points are much more than just flights. Qantas Frequent Flyer Store is one way to use points for discounts on items you use, or need, such as cameras, jewelry, luggage, iPod’s and much, much more.
Other benefits include the oneworld alliance airline lounges, check-in, priority waitlists, preferred boarding and seating – which can be accessed depending on your status. These benefits are level related, such as in Silver, only priority check-in and waitlist are available.
Once you are moved to Gold level, all of the above benefits are available to you, and in Platinum, the extra benefit of business and first class lounges are available.
Benefit and Status Credit Expiration:
Once you have earned enough status credits to be moved up to Silver, Gold or Platinum, you have a year to use them. Once your membership anniversary of one year comes around, you lose your status credits and they return to zero. However, if you continue, yearly, to earn the required number of status credits, your membership status will not zero out at the end of the year.
Status credits for the following are necessary to retain your status and benefits:
For Silver, you need 300 points and will retain 250 if you continue earning points during the year and for Gold you need to obtain 700 points, and will retain 600.
Lifetime Recognition:
Lifetime recognition status credits are for Silver, 7,000 points, and Gold, 14,000 points. This means that once you receive this many credits, you will retain them without the annual cancellation of points.
Qantas states, about Lifetime recognition: “We will keep a tally of all the Status credits accumulated during the life of your membership. As soon as you have enough Status credits, Silver or Gold recognition will be yours for life, regardless of how often you then fly.”
And, you can use these during the year, however, keeping them at this level but adding to them will guarantee lifetime usage, for yourself, and your family – even extended family can use your points!
