Tiger Woods And American Express End Their Sponsorship Deal
American Express has decided to end their sponsorship deal with Tiger Woods and the tournament that he had won five times. The company is shifting its strategy with golf and has signed an endorsement deal instead with the PGA of America.
Tiger Woods American Express Credit Card Commercial
American Express decided to link up with the PGA of America which runs the Ryder Cup and the PGA championship.
Tiger Woods has been with American Express for 10 years in a row and did a commercial that was a spoof of the Caddyshack movie. The vice president of American Express, Rich Lehrfeld, said that they still have a strong relationship with Tiger Woods but that Amex was shifting its strategy to become more consumer oriented.
He also stated that Tiger Woods was an incredible athlete, but that their strategy had changed, and they wanted to use their money to offer more consumer experiences. That would have taken up more of Tiger Woods’ time and may not have been as effective for the company. There had been thoughts of downsizing the promotion which were later rejected.
American Express has decided to remain involved with events run through the PGA of America, and the USGA which includes the U.S. Amateur, U.S. Open, U.S. Women’s Open, and the Senior Open.
It was a deal that had finished running its course and American Express had the desire to be more consumer driven. It was mutually decided between Tiger Woods and Amex that there would be no negotiations for a further contract.
