Get Your Card Rewards Faster With the 3P’s: Points Plus Pay

Posted May 27th, 2010 and last modified June 27th, 2011

Credit card rewards are great, and allow you to get hold of some great merchandise. Is there a way you could have access to some of those great goodies without a full quota of points? Yes there is and it’s called “points plus pay”.

Credit card rewards schemes have become increasingly popular in the last few years. The way they work is by giving customers reward points each time they pay for something using their credit card.

Once you have accumulated enough points, you can then redeem your points for gifts, and merchandise. Most lenders have extensive catalogues with exciting items to choose from including, housewares, gift cards, and even electronic equipment such as Ipods, and digital cameras.

Where Do I Get My Points?

You can collect reward points in a number of ways depending on your credit card provider. The most common ways of gathering points are:

  • Points for every dollar spent with the card
  • Points for simply activating your card for the first time.
  • Making a purchase at one of your credit card providers affiliate partners.
  • Bonus points for using an American Express card.
  • Paying for air travel using your credit card

Once you have accumulated points you can then take a look through your  providers catalogue. There you will find anything from computer equipment, through to travel vouchers and gift experiences. Each item will have a points value, and this can range from 2000 up to 120,000 depending on the cost value of the item.

Customers were crying out however for a way to get hold of some of the merchandise without having to wait months before accumulating enough points. This is when the credit card companies came up with the new scheme “points plus pay”.

How Does Points Plus Pay Work?

What the scheme allows members to do is redeem points against the reward of their choice, and then if they do not yet have the full amount of points needed to purchase their chosen item, they can make up the difference with cash.

So if they wanted a digital camera that had a 50,000 points value, but they only had 30,000 reward points on their card, they could use the 30,000 points they had, and then make up the difference with cash.

A bonus here is that if they pay the difference with their credit card rewards account they will earn points back for the purchase! By doing this you will find that you start to rebuild your now diminished points total, so you do not have to once again start from 0.

So, points plus pay finally provides a quicker way for credit card rewards members to access the goodies even faster than before! What’s it gonna be then? Camera, holiday or iPod?
