      Hi Jasmine

      Thanks for your question.

You may want to consider using a credit repair service. However, only those records that are incorrect or inaccurate can be repaired. Please see this page for more information on removing enquiries.

I have a default and it will be deleted on 2019. What does that mean? Can I do a home loan after that year or do I still need to pay my defaults to get a home loan? If I pay my debt now how long before I can get a home loan?

    • Staff

Hi Alex, thanks for your inquiry!

Overdue accounts and defaults are kept on an individual’s credit file for up to 5 years. It may be ideal to consider credit rating repair to best assess your personal credit situation when applying for a home loan/ mortgage. Even though credit records can be removed, if a default/ debt is sold to a debt-collection agency this may inhibit your chances of being approved for credit in the future.

      I hope this helps.

I currently have a credit score of 146, relative risk rating of -6.01. There are currently 2defaults and 2 sitting in collection on my vida report as well as a couple of paid debuts…my 1st question is : if the outstanding balances are paid off, how quickly will I be able to reestablish a good credit rating?. My second question is, if I have a guarantor on a finance application will that make it possible to attain finance?

      Jonathan | January 28, 2015

      Hi Hamish,

      Thanks for your inquiry.

Depending on the type of default the period which it will appear on an individual’s credit file will vary. For more information on bad credit rating, individual credit files and credit repair please see this page. Please note that lenders have individual lending policies. Each lender will need to assess your financial and personal situation to be able to advise on your options and eligibility.

      I hope this helps!

I have been discharged from Bankruptcy for 2 years.
My file will be deleted in 2017.
I have applied for a few loans and been knocked back, is the decline classed as a default and will it appear by my name for 7 years from the date I applied or does the decline only appear for 3 months?
    I’m confused.
Also it’s not likely I will be approved for a loan until the full 7 years is up correct?
    Thank you in advance!

      Hi TL,

      Thanks for your question,

In terms of having your application declined or ‘knocked back’, the decline is not classed as a default. Applications for finance and credit are kept for five years, bankruptcy files are kept for seven years. For more details in credit card ratings and credit history please take a look at this page.

      I hope this has helped.

I don’t have bad credit but I get declined for a credit card at and. I already have a credit card with westpac but wanted to move all of my accounts over to and, including the credit card. I’ve never defaulted on anything but I got declined because apparently I don’t meet their criteria, despite having a full time job at the same place for a year. How can his be fixed? I just don’t understand how I can not possibly meet criteria, I was only applying for a 1000 limit….

      Hi Sophie,

      Thanks for your question.

There are quite a few reasons why a credit card application might be declined. While you work full time you may not meet the minimum income requirements, or the bank may have determined that the amount of credit you currently hold is already too much a proportion of your income. The banks have a few ways of working out whether someone is eligible, so unfortunately it isn’t always clear. You can read more about it on this page.

Before applying for another card it may be best to call up the bank/card issuer to discuss your eligibility.

      I hope this has helped.

I am yet to have checked my credit rating but following my rent application for credit card has given me an indication it may no longer be a clear record I maintained for the past 31 years, I am unable to recall why this may have happened as no repayment as far I recall had been missed. so as I am looking at investing I would like to know if I would need to get my credit rating first before I am able to look at clearing my credit or are u guys able to review and help me though it all.

    Thanks in advance.

      Hi Wondirad,

It may be worth ordering a copy of your credit history yourself first to see if you can recall what has been missed.

If it’s a problem that you can resolved yourself, you may want to attempt first. If you feel as though you need professional help, then you may want to contact Princeville Credit Advocates.

Please note that there is no guarantee that marks can be removed.
