The key here is to shop only with your card and pay it off every month in full. That way you have a free credit card that earns you a nice amount of free points.

    I currently use an ANZ Frequent Flyer credit card with over 12000 points already accrued. If I was to transfer to this credit card (Qantas American Express Discovery Card), could I keep those points and have them transferred over?

    • Staff
      Jacob | October 9, 2012

      Hi Dave. When you sign up for a frequent flyer credit card that’s linked with Qantas, you have the option of attaching the card to an existing Frequent Flyer membership, if you have one, or you can create a new account. If you want to keep the points you accrued on your ANZ Frequent Flyer Credit Card then write down your existing Frequent Flyer membership number when you apply for the new card. This will keep the account active and stop the points from expiring. Thanks for your question.

    Is the annual fee free only for the first year or avery year?

    Also, the interest rate on purchases, will it only apply after 44 day interest free period? Meaning if I pay on time, I won;t be charged the interest?

    Thanks.

    • Staff
      Jeremy | February 29, 2012

      Hi,

      Yes, this is a $0 annual fee card with no annual fee every year. The interest free period on purchases is a period where you will incur no interest payments on your outstanding debts. If you pay the purchase off within that period, you won’t have to pay more.

      Cheers,
      Jeremy

    Using a credit card often incurs a surcharge. I’ve noted that Amex is over double that of Visa or Mastercard.
    Why is this so?

    • Staff
      Jacob | April 9, 2013

      Hi Alison. Great question. American Express typically charge more with card surcharges due to their rewards program and additional benefits. When you use your American Express credit card with a rewards system, earn rates are higher, however, the card surcharges will also be higher. The cost of accepting an American Express credit card is passed from the card scheme (AMEX / Visa / MasterCard) through to the merchant and then onto you. Hope this has helped, sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Jacob.

      Hi,

      Thanks for your question. If your card application is denied, most likely there is an issue with your credit file or your financial situation taking in to account your income and expenses. The grounds for rejection based on your credit file in many cases due to a prior incident where you didn’t pay a bill on time. Follow it up with a credit reporting agency. Cheers.

    HI,
    i GOT A QUESTION ABOUT REPAYMENT OF MY CREDIT CARD. FOR EXAMPLE, IF i HAVE CREDIT LIMIT $2000? AND I USED IT UP.BUT i STILL WANT TO USE THE CARD TO MAKE PURCHASE.

    MY QUESTION IS THAT: iF i DEPOSIT $2000 IN MY CARD, COULD MY CREDIT LIMIT RETURN TO $2000 IMMEDIATELY? AND NORMALLY, HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE THAT i CAN DEPOSIT MONEY IN MY CARD AFTER i USE UP MY CREDIT LIMIT?

    THANKS FOR YOUR ANSWERS.

    • Staff
      Jacob | August 15, 2012

      Hi Jason. It all depends where the money is coming from. If you’re depositing money from your transaction or savings account to your credit card and all accounts are with the same institution, then the transfer should be instantaneous. If you’re transferring money from a different bank or lender then normal processing times of one to two business days will apply. Thanks for your question.

    Do I get 1 point for every dollar I spend on the card regardless of where or what the item is I purchase? in other words, is the card not restricted to specific items for points earning like the Woolworths card for example?

    thanks

      Jacob | July 11, 2012

      Hi Scott, thanks for your question. According to the Qantas Discovery Card terms and conditions, you will earn points on all purchases except the following:
      ‘(a) charges prepaid prior to the first billing statement for that
      Account following the Enrolment Date;
      (b) Cash advance and other cash services;
      (c) American Express Travellers Cheque and gift cheque purchases;
      (d) charges for dishonoured cheques;
      (e) interest charges;
      (f) annual Card fees;
      (g) late payment charges; and
      (h) all other fees and charges applied to the Card Account.’
      Balance transfers will also not earn any points.
      This is similar to the Woolworths Credit Card terms and conditions, that states that no points are earned on business expenses, interest free promotions, balance transfers and cash advances. Hope this has helped.

After the six month interest free promotional period, if you’re account is in good standing, that is, you have paid your balance in full each month, you will receive interest free days on your purchases (there are no interest free days in you are carrying a balance transfer balance). You don’t lose points after you have earned them, they will be valid for 36 months after the date of last use. Cheers.

      Hi Rachel. Thanks for your question.
      There are a range of fees and charges that apply to this card, please read the product disclosure statement for a full list of the charges you may incur. For instance, if you were to use this card overseas, you would incur a foreign currency conversion fee of approx. 2% of total value of the transaction. But the fees that you’re most likely to incur are all listed in the ‘fees’ tab at the bottom of the review page.

      In answer to your second question. You can only link one frequent flyer membership per card. Currently American Express do not allow joint account credit cards; however you may have a supplementary card. All spending and points accrual will be put towards the primary account.

      You can set up a direct debit arrangement from your American Express card to another institution by enrolling for an automatic payment plan, but you can’t direct debit from one credit card to another. There are no fees for this service but you must make sure that sufficient cleared funds are available in your nominated account on the payment date. If there are insufficient funds and your financial institution dishonours the payment you will be charged a fee.

      You are able to pay your American Express Credit Account from another institution through BPAY. The AMEX biller code is currently 5082 and your reference number is your card number. There are no fees for this service.

    Hi Jenny

    Thanks for your comment

    First I’ll specifically answer your questions:

    1) Yes, it is possible so long as the merchants accept American Express. I’d do this investigation first as it’ll dictate the type of card you apply for.

    2) You are correct – there is no cap on the amount of points you can earn in a month or year

    Furthermore, here are some of the key considerations when choosing a rewards credit card

    Net Rewards Value – This is always the most important consideration . This is a calculation of the cards earn rate X $ your annual spend. This will determine the amount of points earn in a year. From there, you could divide your total annual points by the amount of points required for a $100 gift card. This will give you a relative idea of the true $ value of the points you’ve earned. From that amount, you can then minus the annual fee and rewards program membership fee and this will give you what is called the “Net Rewards Value”. Please give us 3 cards you are interested in, and we’d be happy to calculate this for you.

    The type of rewards you want – some cards are better designed for frequent flyers, and others for other forms of rewards such as gift cards or merchandise.

    Frequent flyer programs – it is important to consider the partner airlines that are available with the rewards program you are interested in.

    Acceptance – if you’re interested in an AMEX, it’s important to consider whether or not the merchants you plan to make purchases through accept AMEX

    BPAY Acceptance – not all cards allow you to earn points with BPAY payments. My colleague Jacob will provide further detail on this for you

    Points capping – some credit cards have a points cap meaning you are unable to earn any further points once you’ve hit a certain spend level.

    Points expiry – some credit cards have an expiry date on the points you earn, where if you don’t redeem them for a reward in time, they will expire.

    Bonus points on sign-up – some credit cards offer great sign-up bonuses. It’s often the case that sign-up offers for new applicants feature the most attractive deals.

    Complimentary flights – some cards offer complimentary flights for each year you hold the card.

    Insurances – some cards offer complimentary travel insurance and purchase protection

    I hope this was helpful for you and look forward to helping you with any further questions you may have.

    Thanks again for your comment!

    Regards

    Does this card give you 0% interest on everything you spend for the next 6 months?

    • Staff
      Marc | February 26, 2013

      Hi Elaine,
      thanks for the question!

      This card allows cardholders to make eligible purchases for 6 months with 0% interest, however minimum repayments will still need to be made to keep the promotion going. Certain transactions like using the card to obtain cash from an ATM, using it for gambling purposes or using it to buy foreign currency can attract normal interest from the day the transaction takes place. For more information about how these offers work this page might be helpful.

      I hope this helps,

      Hi Patrick

      Thank you for your comment.

      Most credit card providers in Australia will automatically decline your credit card application if you have a default on your credit file. I would suggest in this case calling American Express and discussing your situation to get a 100% confirmation as to whether or not they will approve your application

      I hope my response was helpful, please reach out again if you have any further questions.

    I have a Qantas Amex which you are changing the points on utility’s down to .5 instead of 1.5 does the discovery card allow me more points or is there a card that has more points?
    As I am about to cancel my card with you and just use my Citibank Select card

    • Staff
      Jacob | April 30, 2013

      Hi Alan. Thanks for your question. The earn rate of utilities is the same across all American Express Cards. Citibank do allow you to earn points when you pay bills, and you get the option to join Citi Qantas Rewards with the ability to transfer your points to the prestigious Qantas Frequent Flyer account each month. Please refer to transfer rates between airlines here. Jacob.

    What are the charges for using the card at a retail outlet in the USA for example?
    Also, are there any banks overseas where the ATM withdrawal fee does not apply? Thank you.

    • Staff
      Jacob | May 2, 2013

      Hi Kim. Thanks for your question. For a list of fees that apply when you overseas, please refer to the fees table at the bottom of the review and application page. Currently, American Express credit cards do not allow customers to withdraw cash unless their account has a positive balance – if you want to do this, you will need to register with American Express first. If you would like to use this card to purchase over the counter goods in a foreign country, a foreign currency conversion fee will apply in addition to the purchase rate of interest, if your account does not have interest free days. Jacob.

    Will I earn points when I pay bills?

    • Staff
      Jacob | May 7, 2013

      Hi Stephen. Thanks for your question. If you use your card to pay a bill it should be treated as a purchase and attract Qantas points. It does depend on how you pay the bill and what type of transaction it is. BPAY, for instance, in some circumstances will allow you to earn points because the transaction is treated as a purchase, while in other circumstances, it can be treated as a cash advance and will not earn points. You can double check with the specific merchant before you pay the bill. Jacob.

    I currently have a platinum Amex card, do I have to fill in more forms to obtain an Amex qantas discovery card?
    Thanks for your reply.

      Hi Bernard. Thanks for your question. You can contact American Express directly to see if they will transfer your account. The sometimes do this when someone is upgrading a card, but this may not apply to your situation as you will be reducing your annual fee. Otherwise, you can pay out and close the account and then re-apply for this card. The online application process is fairly simple and can be completed in 10-15 minutes. Please read the review and application page for information on what you need to do to apply. Jacob.

    Just to confirm – I can use the accumulated frequent flyer points to purchase products in the FF shop (as well as purchase airfares)?
    I currently have an AMEX/NAB card but FF points no longer accumulating.
    Do I cancel this one or perhaps transfer to the new one?
    Thank you

      Hi Anne. Thanks for your question. You can use your points to redeem for more than just flights through the Qantas store, check their website for a full list of redemption options. If your primary concern is earning Qantas frequent flyer points, you can apply for a card that lets you do this. Please be aware though, this card does not offer a balance transfer promotion to customers looking to transfer a balance. You can compare Qantas Frequent Flyer credit cards here – look for the cards that are offering a balance transfer offer in the comparison table. Jacob.
