Qantas Frequent Flyer Linked Credit Cards – Earn Frequent Flyer Points Faster!
Posted July 19th, 2010 and last modified April 3rd, 2013Rewards, points, savings, and more Every retailer you visit seems to have a card for you to carry around. But often, those cards are only good for use in that one chain of stores and the rewards can only be cashed in there.
Qantas Frequent Flyer rewards, however, can be collected at retailers all over Australia.
How to Earn Points (all the following can only be done through the specific retailers that accept the Qantas Frequent Flyer card):
- shopping for clothing, groceries, fuel, electronics, and liquor
- dine out at restaurants
- hire a rental vehicle
- take a flight
- stay at a hotel
- do your daily banking
- use your credit card
How to Spend Points:
- pay for a flight, one-way or round-trip
- pay for an upgrade on your flight
- pay for, or receive a discount on, your hotel booking, rental vehicle, or other travel needs
- make purchases on the online Qantas store
The catch with frequent flyer points is the sheer number you need to earn! A short, one-way flight of just 600 miles will cost you as about 8,000 points. (If you want first-class it will be 24,000.) At an earnings rate of 2 points per litre of fuel or 1 point per dollar spent (over $30) on groceries, 8,000 points may be a couple years away!
How to Earn Faster:
Imagine if your rewards earning potential was not limited by specific retailers or a standard list of purchases. Imagine earning points on every single purchase you make every single day!
Try using a Qantas Frequent Flyer Linked Credit Card to pay. Every time you use it, you earn points 1 point per $1 spent, in most cases. And it doesn’t matter where you shop!
Double-dipping:
Want to earn rewards even faster? Try double-dipping. Shop at a retailer that accepts your Qantas card AND pay with your Qantas linked credit card! Earn points on both cards.
A Cautionary Tale:
There was once a family who decided to pay for all their monthly expenses on their credit card. The plan was to simplify the budget. Quick and easy payment for all purchases, bills, household expenses, and extras. Then a quick and easy bill payment each month. One bill to pay is easier than ten, right?
This family we’ll call them the Smiths got carried away. It was so easy to pay, that they forgot to keep track of all their expenses. When the credit card bill arrived, it was much higher than expected. The bill was far greater than their pay cheques could cover. So they paid what they could and vowed to be more careful next month.
This pattern continued month after month, until the credit card was at its limit and their bank account was in the red. The Smiths didn’t have enough money to pay their bills this month, they didn’t have enough money for food or vehicle repairs, they were stuck! The bank account remained empty and the credit card balance full.
Can You Handle the Card?
Before you decide to use your credit card regularly and earn all those extra points, ask yourself a few questions.
- Have I had revolving credit in the past?
- Did I generally keep that credit paid off?
- Or was that credit too often maxed out?
- Do I have a clear budget that I am good at sticking to?
- Or do I really have no idea what goes in and out of my account each month?
- Am I thrifty by nature?
- Or am I an impulsive spender by nature?
Don’t set yourself up for credit failure! If you can’t handle the card, stick with the slow and steady earnings of the Qantas Frequent Flyer card alone for your regular, day-to-day expenses. Use your Qantas linked credit card just as you would any other credit card for big ticket items, unexpected expenses, and online purchases or bookings only. You’ll still collect extra miles by using a Qantas linked card with caution.
