Credit Repair – Repair Your Credit Rating So You Can Apply For Credit
Posted April 28th, 2010 and last modified July 12th, 2011If you want to repair your credit rating to apply for new credit, there are a few different options to choose from.
You can choose to use a professional service or you can do it yourself. Using a professional service can be to your advantage because they can act as a intermediary and disinterested party when trying to negotiate payment terms with credit card companies or to try and dispute inaccuracies from your credit report.
Order a copy of your credit file
Receive email alerts whenever specific changes occur on your credit file for 12 months. You also receive a copy of your credit file despatched within one working day..
Receive your credit file with information on:
- Details of consumer credit enquiries
- Details of overdue consumer credit accounts

- Information on your current relationship with a credit provider
Doing it yourself is definitely possible but it does require time, patience and research into what exactly is required of you for your credit repair.
What is Detailed in a Credit Report?
When you review your credit report, you will see your name, address, date of birth and even your mobile phone number. In addition, you will find information about payment histories for your gas, electricity, banking, insurance and other financial providers. Any or all of these entities may have made enquiries into your ability to handle credit. You will also find your employment history, current employer information, credit applications, overdue accounts, court judgements, clear-outs, bankruptcies, name changes and crossed or linked files.
Wondering how you ever had a credit report started? Any time you have made an application for credit, you have consented to have the provider of this credit add your personal information to a credit reporting agency.
What is Required to Repair Your Credit Rating
There are 14.7 million credit files currently active in Australia. Within these files, there are over 3.47 million negative listings according the Veda Advantage in November 2008. Many of these listings are inaccurate and certainly contestable. In order to make the appropriate corrections, you must do the following:
Get a copy of your credit report – It is difficult to know what to fix if you do not know what the problem is. Highlight the sections that have incorrect information and also information that is in need of repair. You can use different highlighter pens to make the identification easier.- Dispute incorrect information - You are well within your right to dispute any information that is provided in your credit report that is inaccurate.
- Take care of past overdue accounts – It will be difficult to make headway on credit repair if you have accounts that are outstanding and are in need of clearing. Make sure that you are current on these accounts and pay off any charge-offs.
- Try to negotiate a payment plan with creditors – This task may be easier with a professional agency but you can try this yourself, as well. Contact your credit card providers and explain to them that you have every intention of clearing your debt. Propose a payment plan that is within your budget and will be able to pay off the debt in a timely manner.
- Work with debt collectors - If you have been turned into collections agencies by your creditors, do your best to work with them so you are showing good faith that you intend to pay off your debts.
Bring down your accounts – You will want to make all of your accounts more manageable you should pay particular attention to accounts that are maxed out. With continually accruing interest, it is easy for these accounts to stay near or past their maximum limit. Do you what you can to reduce these accounts as soon as possible. This will help your credit rating.- Get new credit - This may seem like crazy advice but if you are careful, it will help you in the long run. You already have bad marks established from existing creditors so you will want to secure new credit in order to have a fresh start. This may be difficult because you may be turned town due to your less than stellar credit history. If this is the case then you can opt for a secured credit card.
What Credit Repair Will Do For You
