Southern Cross Credit Union Credit Cards

SCCU

Do you want a low rate or a platinum credit card? Southern Cross Credit Union provides both kinds.

Southern Cross Credit Union began operations in 1966, in the form of Tweed BGF Members Credit Union, to serve banking needs of local banana growers. A merger with Lismore Community Credit Union in 1975 resulted in a change of name, leading to the name, Tweed Byron Credit Union. The existing name, Southern Cross Credit Union, came into effect in 1997, and this credit union services more than 20,000 members through its 10 branches located across the Northern Rivers, from Tweed Heads to Ballina to Casino. This credit union offers a range of financial services and products, which include two types of credit cards.

MasterCard finds acceptance at more than 22 million locations around the world, so you can look forward to using both these credit cards while travelling overseas. Getting a MyCard MasterCard through Southern Cross Credit Union comes with other benefits too.

  • Discounted annual fee

If you apply before a given date you get to keep paying a discounted annual fee for as long as you keep your account active, and this applies to both credit cards.

  • Free insurance covers

Guaranteed pricing scheme and purchase cover insurance are standard extras with, both, low rate and platinum cards. If you have the platinum card you get additional covers in the form of international travel insurance, interstate flight inconvenience insurance, and transit accident insurance.

  • Platinum concierge service

A platinum concierge service is at the disposal of platinum cardholders, and cardholders can avail of this service at any time. This service can assist you in locating restaurants and making reservations; in making flight and hotel reservations; in booking tickets for movies, live shows, and concerts; and in a number of business related matters.

  • Introductory rate

The Platinum MyCard MasterCard offers a  interest rate for  months, applicable on purchases and balance transfers. The Low Rate MyCard MasterCard offers a discounted interest rate for  months on balance transfers.

Applying for a Southern Cross Credit Union credit card

You can apply by visiting any Southern Cross Credit Union branch, you can apply over the phone, and you can apply online. If you wish to apply online, start by clicking on the ‘Go to Site’ button placed next to the card of your choice. Make sure you meet the following application criteria before you apply.

Application Criteria

  • You’re over 18 years old
  • You’re a permanent Australian resident
  • You don’t have poor creditworthiness
  • You have a valid email address
  • You meet the minimum income requirement ($25,000 p.a. for the low rate card, and $35,000 for the platinum card)

Information required to successfully complete your credit card application

  • Personal details. These include your name, contact details, marital status, number of dependents, driver’s licence number, and the name and phone number of a relative of friend who resides at a different address.
  • Employment details. This section requires your occupation, the industry you work in, your employer’s trading name, and your employer’s contact details.
  • Financial information. Your credit card application also requires details surrounding your income and expenditure. When disclosing income, provide details of income from all sources. Expenditure includes you share of living expenses as well as all other recurring expenses, and you also have to provide details about all existing debts like loans, credit cards, and store cards.

What’s next?

After you submit your application, and if there is a need to collect more information, a Card Services rep might contact you. Your employer’s payroll department should receive an income verification call, and it helps if the department knows of this impending call in advance. Non-members have to apply for Southern Cross Credit Union membership in order to receive their cards, and they also have to complete a legally required identity verification process. This might require that you visit a Southern Cross Credit Union branch.

Frequently asked questions

If you’ve got a question about Southern Cross Credit Union credit cards, you might find the answer here. If you don’t, use the form at the end of the page and ask away.

Does it take much time to complete the online application?

It’s a good idea to begin with all the required information close at hand, and if you do this you can get through the application in about 10 to 15 minutes. You can save an incomplete application at any stage and retrieve it later.

Can I find out about my application’s status?

Yes. You get an Application ID upon submitting your application, and you can use the same to check your application’s status by visiting the Card Services website or by calling Card Services on 1800 806 508.

What are the minimum and maximum credit limits?

The low rate card comes with a minimum credit limit of $2,000 and a maximum limit of $15,000. For the platinum card, the minimum limit is $6,000 and the maximum is $30,000.

How can my credit limit increase?

After you use your card for a given duration you can apply for an increase in your card’s limit, but approval is subject to the discretion of Card Services.

What change takes place at the end of the promotional period?

When the promotional interest rate period ends outstanding balances from balance transfers attract the given card’s cash advance rate, and this is the case with, both, low rate and platinum cards. Leftover balances from purchases, if you use the platinum card, start attracting the card’s purchase rate.

Does membership to the rewards program require me to pay an additional fee?

No, when you get the Platinum MyCard MasterCard you enrol into the Card Services Rewards Program for free.

How can I find out how many reward points I’ve accumulated?

Your credit card statement offers periodical updates telling you just how many reward points you’ve earned. You can also find out by visiting the Card Services website or by calling 1300 135 538.

Is there a cap on the number of points I can earn?

As a platinum cardholder you can earn as many as 100,000 in a 12 months cycle, which begins from the date you enroll.

Do these reward points expire?

As long as you keep your account active and in good standing, your reward points don’t expire.

How can I earn reward points?

You earn reward points each time you use your platinum card to make an eligible purchase. You can make these purchases in-store, online, or over the phone, and you earn 1.25 reward points for every dollar spent.

What can I get when redeeming reward points?

You can book a flight through Take Flight, or you can transfer your reward points to a frequent flyer program. You have the option to use your reward points in the form of cashback, to pay your card’s annual fee or to reduce your account’s outstanding balance. You also get a number of travel and store vouchers from which to choose.

What should I do if I’ve lost my card?

To report a lost or stolen card you should call 1800 621 199 immediately.
