Banks have a long history of getting involved in the community, particularly when it comes to sport. As well as being an opportunity to support individuals and teams across Australia, sponsorship and donations give banks another arena for marketing and publicity. Plus it’s a way for a bank to show its true colours in the sporting world.
So, if you want your credit card provider to match your sports team loyalties, here are the key partnerships between banks and sports in Australia.
ANZ: ANZ Stadium, tennis and netball
As one of the “big four” banks in Australia, ANZ has built up an extensive sponsorship portfolio that includes many sports initiatives. It has been the named sponsor of Sydney’s ANZ Stadium since 2008 – a venue that was purpose-built for the 2000 Olympic and Paralympic games. It now regularly hosts rugby league, rugby union, football, AFL and cricket matches, as well as a wide range of other events.
ANZ is also a major sponsor of tennis and netball events and initiatives. These include:
- The Australian Open. ANZ is an Associate Sponsor of the Australian Open. This renowned tennis event is held in Melbourne during the last two weeks of January and is the first of the four Grand Slam tennis events of the year. The competition includes men’s and women’s singles; men’s, women’s and mixed doubles; juniors championships; and special exhibitions. It attracts the world’s top tennis players along with millions of fans each year.
- ANZ Hot Shots. In 2014, ANZ partnered with Tennis Australia to support the sporting organisation’s children’s starter program, Hot Shots. Since launching in 2008, it has become one of the most popular sports programs for primary school children in Australia, with more than 500,000 children now taking part each year.
- Shanghai Rolex Masters. ANZ is the Diamond sponsor for this premier tournament, held in Shanghai each October. It is also the official International Banking and Finance Partner of the tournament for five years starting in 2013. Beyond this, ANZ officials have stated it will “gain naming rights to the China Tennis Development Program, a grassroots initiative aimed at developing young talent and supporting the growth of tennis in China”.
- ANZ Championship. This elite netball event involves five teams from Australia and five from New Zealand battling it out in 69 matches played over 17 weeks across both countries. ANZ has been the sponsor since the tournament began in 2008.
- ANZ NetSetGo. Australia’s official netball development program, focuses on encouraging children aged between 5 and 10 years to participate in the sport. It incorporates skill activities, minor games and modified matches in a fun and safe environment. ANZ has been the naming rights sponsor of NetSetGo since 2013.
Bankwest: AFL and Soccer
With its roots in Western Australia, Bankwest has focused most of its sponsorship in local communities. When it comes to sport, the bank has focused on football with the following two partnerships:
- West Coast Eagles. Bankwest is a co-major sponsor of the West Coast Eagles Football Club, and has had its name on the AFL team’s jerseys since 2012. Bankwest has also strengthened its involvement with the West Coast Eagles through the Bankwest Commentators Cup app. This service allows fans to share their thoughts on the footy season, as well as offering unique competitions and bonuses for Bankwest customers. For example, in 2016, anyone who signed up for a Bankwest home loan and met the application criteria had the opportunity to receive an exclusive West Coast Eagles Access Pass and a signed guernsey.
- Football West. Football West is a not-for-profit organisation focused on managing soccer activities and developing interest at a grassroots level. It is the peak body for soccer in Western Australia and is responsible for the delivery of the game across metropolitan and regional areas. Bankwest’s partnership with Football West is focused on funding female football programs across WA and supporting referees.
Citi has been a major sponsor of the Sydney Swans since 2005. This was also the year that the red-and-white club won its first AFL premiership since moving to Sydney in 1982.
As part of this alliance, Citi provides a range of seasonal offers and benefits for its customers and for Sydney Swans members. For example, Citi cardholders have access to seven Citi Priority Queues at SGC outlets at all Sydney Swans home games when they pay using their Citi card.
Other previous seasonal promotions have included Citi VIP match day experiences at the Citi Lounge, the chance to win a $1,000 Citi Prepaid card when attending a game and the chance to attend a VIP barbeque with Swans team members.
Commonwealth Bank: Cricket
CommBank has been a major supporter of cricket at both a grassroots and professional level for over 28 years, with key partnerships including:
- Cricket Australia. CommBank is the longest-standing partner of Cricket Australia. The sponsorship began with the Commonwealth Bank Cricket Academy and now includes the Australian Men’s and Women’s teams, as well as the Test Series.
- Cricket Victoria. CommBank has supported Cricket Victoria for over 25 years, including sponsorship of the Victorian Bushrangers and Victorian Spirit teams.
- Cricket Tasmania. The bank supports Tasmania’s peak cricket body as a sponsor of the Youth Pathways Program for young cricketers in Tasmania. The program includes the Emerging Tigers, Intrastate Cup and Youth State Teams.
- Queensland Cricket. It has a partnership with Queensland Cricket and the Brisbane Heat in the Big Bash League. As well as ongoing support, the bank has offered funds to help with repairs after natural disasters. For example, in 2015, CommBank provided aide to Rockhampton Cricket Inc. and Callide Dawson Cricket Association following damage from Tropical Cyclone Marcia.
- Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars. CommBank is the naming rights sponsor of the Australian Women’s Cricket Team, which it has supported since 1999.
- Commonwealth Bank Test Series. The bank became the naming rights sponsor for the Australian Test Series and Test team in 2013.
- Australian Country Cricket Championship. CommBank is a supporter of this annual tournament that brings together teams from across regional Australia.
- Imparja Cup. CommBank supports this national indigenous tournament, held annually in the Northern Territory.
- CommBank Cricket Club. In addition to these ongoing sponsorships, CommBank has set up an online hub, the CommBank Cricket Club, that offers news on the cricket season and resources for clubs that wish to apply for sponsorship.
HSBC Australia: Rugby Union
As a global bank, HSBC has a wide range of sports sponsorships across the world. In Australia, it has a long history of supporting rugby union.
- Rugby team sponsorship. HSBC was the naming rights sponsor of the NSW Waratahs team for 12 years, and in 2014 became the official banking partner of Australia’s national team, the Qantas Wallabies.
- Australian rugby events and initiatives. HSBC is also the naming rights sponsor of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series and the HSBC Volunteer of the Year partnership with the Australian Rugby Union.
- HSBC international sports support. HSBC’s overseas support of rugby includes the Lions tours, the Hong Kong Sevens, and the Sevens World Series. It is also a major supporter of golf, with involvement in 35 tournaments in places such as China, Singapore, Abu Dhabi and Brazil.
Macquarie Bank: Macquarie Sports
Macquarie Group has a dedicated sports arm, Macquarie Sports. Established in 1999, it is focused on providing opportunities for young people through sporting clinics, programs and scholarships.
It has provided opportunities for more than 100,000 children across Australia, and runs clinics for a wide range of sports, including cricket, netball, soccer, rugby league and rugby union. These clinics provide young people across Australia with an opportunity to engage in sports and interact with sporting heroes. Macquarie Sports partners include:
- Football NSW
- The NSW Waratahs
- Tiwi College
- Cricket NSW
- National Paintball Games
NAB: AFL and Football Federation Australia
NAB is committed to fostering partnerships at a local and national level across a wide range of industries. The bank’s sport support is focused on AFL and soccer, with a range of initiatives that include:
- NAB AFL Women’s League. NAB is the named partner of the AFL Women’s League and the AFL Women’s Rising Star pathway, which provides young women with the opportunity to play AFL at an elite level.
- NAB AFL Auskick. Since 2006, NAB has supported the Auskicks program, which provides over 170,000 young children across the country with the opportunity to learn and develop fundamental footy skills every year.
- NAB AFL Rising Stars program. This program is focused on the development and support of aspiring young AFL players so that they can progress from grassroots to elite status.
- The NAB Challenge. Held every February, the NAB Challenge is an event that gives fans the chance to see how their team is shaping up for the season ahead. It also gives NAB the chance to build relationships with customers and communities through a range of local initiatives. These include opportunities such as tossing the coin pre-match, enjoying a behind-the-scenes experience with a club, or attending a pre-match luncheon.
- National FFA team sponsorship. NAB has been supporting the Caltex Socceroos since 2005 and partnered with the Westfield Matildas in 2015, and provides NAB staff and customers with opportunities to “get close to the action”.
- National Football League partnerships. NAB isa partner of the Hyundai A-League and Westfield W-League. It regularly offers benefits to customers who are football fans, such as match tickets, meetings with players, flights and accommodation for games and the opportunity to toss the coin.
- NAB Young Footballers of the Year. As part of its support of the Hyundai A-League and Westfield W-League, NAB also runs the Young Footballer of the Year program, which acknowledges the outstanding performances of young players every month. At the end of the season, one overall winner for both Leagues receives a $10,000 personal investment portfolio and an NAB Private Client Manager who can assist them with meeting their financial goals.
- Westfield FFA Cup. This event provides amateur and semi-professional clubs with an opportunity to play football on the biggest stages in the country, or to host the best footballers in Australia at their own home ground. As part of its support, NAB runs a Golden Goals initiative where it donates $2,500 to grassroots clubs for every goal scored by an amateur or semi-professional player whose club is competing. The ball just needs to find the back of the net during regular or extra time whilst competing against a Hyundai A-League club.
St.George has a long-standing history of supporting sport, and is a major sponsor of two rugby teams:
- The St.George Illawarra Dragons. The bank’s partnership with the St.George Illawarra Dragons rugby league team goes back more than 30 years. St.George also runs a number of sporting initiatives in the Illawarra community, such as the St.George Bank Community Challenge, which gives under 10s teams from local junior clubs the chance to compete on the field during half-time at Dragon home games. It has also established the St.George Bank Little Dragons Team of the Month Award, which rewards a team that “truly displays the values of fair play, courage, teamwork, generosity and going above and beyond – on the field, or off”.
- The St.George Reds. St.George has been the principal sponsor of this Queensland rugby union team since 2011. As well as supporting the team, which competes in the Super Rugby competition, St.George and the Reds partner to offer community events and programs across Queensland, such as the St.George Bank Rugby Coaching Clinics.
