The St.George Bank began in the late 1840s with the merging of the State Bank of South Australian and the Savings Bank of South Australia. George Cross was assigned to the position of chairman of the board of the St.George Cooperative Building Society Limited, which was established several years later. After a months time, the Cronulla & District Co-operative Building Society was established and in 1945 these two firms merged. Expansion began with 38 branches being opened. With the merging of the two, the St.George and Cronulla Societies was formed.

It was proclaimed to be a Permanent Building Society during the St.George and Cronulla Societies' annual general meeting. It set a goal of providing its members financial assistance by purchasing residential areas that were owner-occupied.

This Society began to expand in the 1960s. Sydney and Miranda were the first branches that were opened at that time. It underwent aggressive growth and became one of the leading providers of financial counseling services, home loans and secure investment opportunities in New South Wales. Along with this growth, over 40 new agencies were formed in different towns including Double Bay and Murwillumbah.

Happy Dragon, the Society icon, came into being in 1970. The Happy Dragon's first appeared during the celebration of Capt. Cook's arrival in Australia.

Slim lining the banking operations, the society decided to go online and was the first Building Society to use the Internet efficiently to make transactions. An IBM mainframe computer was installed and had 30 terminals connected to it. It also set up an electronic banking system to be used online and the introduced the black light signature system, which allowed customers the convenience of doing their banking at any branch.

St.George Bank had its assets reach $1 billion in 1979. It also became the biggest building Society in the country with over 100 branches and 800 employees. It earned its banking license and banking status in 1992 and became a full-service bank after the purchase of Barclay's Commercial Banking division. During the 1990s, St.George also purchased KPMG Financial Services and SEALCORP, launched Business Banking and merged with Advance Bank. BankSA was also established.

In early 2000, the St.George Bank became hugely successful after making several purchases. It took over the Deutsche Bank market lending business and the Scottish Pacific Business Finance Group. St.George was really growing with a 20% increase in profit, and there were more than 400 branches across the country in 2003.

In 2006, St.George net profits rose by 17.9% and it earned $1 billion in profit for the year. It did better than expected, especially since the economy was experiencing some rough times.
