St.George Vertigo MasterCard Passing On RBA Interest Rate Cuts
Understand why the St.George Vertigo MasterCard is geared to meeting the customer’s needs. Discover the great combination of offers, rates and fees that make this card so well-respected amongst independent commentators.
Back in May 2009 it was noted by credit card industry-watchers that St.George wasn’t playing the game properly by dropping the interest rate on their St.George Vertigo card by a half percent to 12.49%. Scandalously, they were being a little stubborn and bucking the trend adopted by the rest of the Australian banks by actually passing on to their customers the interest rate cuts the Reserve Bank had made. In the midst of the euphemistically-entitled credit-crunch (more accurately a global economic disaster) – brought on by the utterly irresponsible activities of American banks – St.George was doing its bit to restore a little public confidence and give the average Australian a helping hand financially.
In fact, Money Magazine awarded the St.George Vertigo Best Balance Transfer Credit Card in 2009, after naming it Cheapest Credit Card in 2008.

Today’s St.George Vertigo
This consumer-oriented attitude continues today, and Banks.com, an independent reviewer of the Australian financial sector, has gone so far as to say that “there truly is no better card to have” than the St.George Vertigo MasterCard. It is currently offering a fantastic 2.99% p.a. for 6 months on balance transfers and
12.49%on purchases, and an annual fee of $55.
Okay,
12.49%
isn’t the 10.99% of May 2009, and
2.99% p.a. for 6 months isn’t the 0% that existed on balance transfers back then. But times have changed, and both rates and fees have been sneaking up. 0% balance transfer deals have had their day for the time being. Still, the St.George Vertigo continues to lead the way by offering the customer a great all-round deal that knocks the competition sideways. There are no compromises on this card. A low interest rate does not mean a high annual fee, nor vice-versa. Neither is their balance transfer offer designed to lure customers into making high interest purchases that get trapped in the repayments queue behind that cheap balance transfer. Offering a dual 2.99% deal is the surest sign that St.George has their customers’ interests at heart, because, as in May 2009, their are foregoing the opportunity to take advantage of their customers.
Anyone seeking a credit card that does it all and is provided by a bank that focuses on more than profits should look at the St.George Vertigo MasterCard. St.George is currently running an ad campaign entitled ‘Big Enough, Small Enough’, meaning that they are big enough to offer all that a big bank should offer, yet they are still “local” enough to provide the best in customer care.
St.George is not one of the “Big Four” banks in Australia – they rank number five in size – but there is no disputing the fact that they hold top spot where the customer is concerned.
