Super Bowl 2011 Credit Card Commercials

Posted March 11th, 2011 and last modified July 4th, 2011

Many people will be saddened to hear that credit card commercials are now no longer going to be aired between NFL matches.

They have long been known for their entertaining advertisements but now lenders can no longer afford the huge advertising budget. There have been many memorable credit card advertisements shown between NFL matches and below you will find some of the best.

The MasterCard MacGyver Super Bowl XXXL

Shown in 2006, this advertisement brought back MacGyver, the resourceful action hero. It brought back the trend of the 80′s and allowed many people to reminisce about the good old days.

Capital One The Snowglobe Super Bowl XLI

This was one of the most recent advertisements shown in 2007. It featured a family who had to live inside a poorly insulated home. Then when the cameras pulled away, it showed many more problems that the family were facing. It was a really good credit card advertisement as they managed to make it look like a film.

MasterCard Homer Advertisement Super Bowl XXXVIII

The Homer Simpson advertisement shown during the Super Bowl in 2004 is known to be one of the most memorable. It features Homer Simpson rushing around and paying for things on his MasterCard. Quite a few favourite Simpson characters pop up throughout the advertisement.

American Express Dana Carvey/Jon Lovitz Super Bowl XXIII

Going to one of the very earliest Super Bowl credit card commercials, this one featured Saturday Night Live members Dana Carvey and Jon Lovitz. One of the main reasons why this is so memorable is because the music in the ad was particularly bad.

Visa – Tiki And Ronde Barber – Twins 2

This commercial shown in the Super Bowl XXXVII was actually football based. The twins tried to confuse the shop assistant by paying by cheque.

Visa- The Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon

This commercial shown in 2002 showed actor Kevin Bacon trying to avoid showing Identification when paying for a cheque. It highlighted the difficulties faced when paying for a cheque instead of credit card.

The Cost of Super Bowl Advertisements

When you look at the cost of Super Bowl advertisements, you will soon see why many lenders are unable to afford the advertising space. It costs a whopping $3 million for just 30 second commercials. The reason behind this is the fact that the Super Bowl receives around 106 million viewers. It is thought that this year those viewing figures will reach 110 million.
While you won’t see any credit card advertisements, you will see many celebrities such as Ozzy Osborne and Justin Beiber, Kim Kardashian, and Roseanne Barr.

There are advertisements by Visa that will be shown pregame. This advertising campaign will feature four men who have missed family births and weddings for more than 44 years when the games are on.

Overall, the lack of credit card advertisements during the Super Bowl will no doubt be missed. It is the first year in over a decade that lenders have not been able to afford the advertising space.
