American Express and Twitter have partnered to give Amex cardholders a new shopping experience – but do social media and credit cards go hand in hand?

About American Express Sync on Twitter

American Express has introduced a new service on Twitter that allows cardholders to make purchases through their tweets. Called ‘Amex Sync,’ the new technology will allow Amex members who sync their card with Twitter to buy products just by including an allocated hashtag specific to what you’re buying. Although this service is only available in the US, Australians may soon be part of the American Express tweeting experience.

How does it work?

Special Offers

1 Sync your eligible American Express with Twitter at sync.americanexpress.com/twitter

2 Check your Twitter feed for special hashtags from American Express

3 If you see an offer you like and want to purchase, tweet the hashtag to load it onto your synced American Express card

4 Shop with you card as per normal, you don’t need to show your phone or any coupons. When you make the qualified purchase you will receive an automatic statement credit.

Special Products

1 Sync your eligible American Express with Twitter at sync.americanexpress.com/twitter

2 Check your Twitter feed for special hashtags from American Express

3 If you see a product you like and want to purchase, tweet the special product hashtag for the item you want and then confirm the purchase and your item will be delivered.

Are my credit card details secure?

Twitter doesn’t have the best reputation for security*. We always seem to hear how accounts are being constantly hacked into. And while that may a problem when your Twitter account makes embarrassing tweets, it’s a different situation when credit-card information is included.

According to Amex, Twitter never gets the credit card information, it stays within American express – a confirmation email is sent to the cardholder as well, so if someone does hijack your Twitter account, you’ll know straight away.

Your ability to earn other types of rewards, like the regular American Express Membership Rewards will be applied after any statement credits.

The larger question that Twitter and Amex will face is whether or not consumers what to share their purchases with the public. Social media has shown that oversharing is very much possible, but only with certain kinds of information. Twitter is an open platform where anyone can say anything – be aware that this means people will know what your buying and are open to give you an opinion to it.
